In plain words
If a tree is to sprout, a seed is needed. That seed has two halves. Only when the two halves come together does it become a plant. If you sow a single half, it does not sprout. One half is negative, one half positive. One half is śakti, energy; the second is matter. Only when matter and energy come together does a new birth come. We must never say that we should go without believing what we do not know.
The unseen itself makes you eat the fruit of your karmas: that is the secret, O jīva. Tai tai, tai tai, tai, O puppet! Look at its antics, man, this leather puppet! Beauty, youth, the strength of the senses: do not strut because you have them, brother. It lies ahead, and very soon: the crocodiles' feast called old age. Tai tai. You cannot move about, your eyes grow dim, on your face wrinkles have formed, your hair has turned grey; calling you an old monkey, the little ones snigger at you, and you snap at them, puppet! Tai tai.
Is this what we keep looking at? The body may grow old. Child, boy, man, grandfather: just one person! You are a boy. Ten years before, a child; at 20 years, a man; at 50 years, a grandfather. These four are you yourselves. It comes as a time difference. In trying to recognise well the principle that is in us, we must not say pratyakṣa pramāṇa. There is a tree. It looks very green. It is growing very well. Branch upon branch it keeps spreading. Its cool shade gives so much comfort. ‘Ah, what fine shade the tree has given!’ you think, and you look at the tree that can be seen.
