Teaching them the Nārāyaṇa bhajan, he was telling them: Do you see! How all our teachers are deceiving us! Teachers, do not take this otherwise! My father Hiraṇyakaśipu: ‘Teach only artha and kāma! Do not teach about Dharma and Mokṣa,’ he commanded these teachers. What are these studies of ours? Only for earning money? Must we go to colleges and take degrees to earn money? If you go to the bazaar, are not any number of beggars earning? Are not any number of thieves earning money? Is education needed to earn money? ‘Shame! Our gurus are giving teachings of this kind. We must not follow them in the least. Next, kāma. Is education needed to enjoy the desires of the senses? Look, there is a monkey, here is a dog, here is a rat! All these are enjoying them. Is schooling needed to enjoy these! It is not needed. We need teachers to teach the Ātmavidyā we do not know. Why do we need teachers to teach matter? We must stand against this education that teaches artha and kāma.’ In this way Prahlāda taught the children. Hearing it, the children all started a strike! ‘“Nārāyaṇa bhaj Nārāyaṇ”: you must not utter even the name of Nārāyaṇa. Utter anything else,’ Hiraṇyakaśipu had commanded. Against that, Prahlāda had prepared all these children. Then came Caṇḍa and Amārka. They beat their heads. As the saying goes, ‘The monkey that ruined itself ruined the whole grove’: ‘Not only is this Prahlāda doing it, but all the children are singing the Nārāyaṇa bhajan! What a fate, boy!’ they cried, and punished Prahlāda severely.
