In plain words
On the way a sannyāsī crossed her path. His was not true sannyāsa. It was a sannyāsa of the clothes, nothing more. He had changed his clothes, but not his thinking. He had changed his garments, but his guṇas had not changed. Every day that man used a dried-up bottle gourd for the water he drank. Thinking that if he kept it beside him someone would carry it off, he had put it under his head! Resolving to teach him true Vairāgya, Ubhaya Bhāratī said aloud to the women who were coming with her: ‘Look, he is a renouncer. Yet he has set his attachment on his gourd, wondering whether someone will steal it, poor man! He cannot let go of this small thing, useless and worthless, poor man! He is lying with it under his head.’ This renouncer heard those words. ‘Chī!’ On the one side, anger rose in him that she had insulted him like this. Ubhaya Bhāratī finished her bath and was coming back. He noticed this, took the gourd and flung it down in front of her. Then Ubhaya Bhāratī: ‘Ayyo! I thought it was attachment alone; he has Ahaṅkāra as well! Otherwise would he fling this and drop it on my feet?’ she thought. Then she stopped for a few minutes. ‘Sannyāsī! Along with attachment, Ahaṅkāra too is growing in you. It is not good. Show respect at least to the clothes you have put on. As long as this Ahaṅkāra and possessiveness remain, you cannot be one who has renounced every tie. Put away attachment to the body and enter into attachment to the Ātma,’ she taught him, with a sweet, calm and lovely feeling. Where is there any difference of woman and man for Jñāna? Women and men are of the body.
Jñāna Has No Differences of Prakṛti
But Jñāna has no difference of sex. No difference of caste. No difference of colour. No differences of Prakṛti. The sannyāsī came running and fell at her feet. ‘Mother! Because there is no one to teach this truth, sannyāsīs go on playacting like this. From today Ubhaya Bhāratī herself is my guru,’ and with that he bowed to her. In this way, among mankind, people seem to be doing ever so many kinds of sādhana!
