Passage 6

In plain words

The people of Bhārata have forgotten such a sacred culture of Bhārata. Disciples who had learnt their studies with the guru and then went back to enter the householder's life would take the guru's Pādukās with them, worship them every day at home, and call the guru-principle to mind. But all these are principles that belong to the outer. What is the true relationship? We must install these Pādukās in the place of the heart. We must begin outwardly and then bring it to its end in the inner Ātma. All this belongs only to the path of karma. We must enter the path of karma, fill the heart on the path of Bhakti and attain Kaivalya on the path of Jñāna. ‘Jñānādevatu kaivalyaṃ,’ they said. However long it lasts, we must not let our life end in worldly and natural actions alone. Just as one goes from one class to the next, we must go from one level to the next. We must recognise the principle of these three: karma, upāsanā and Jñāna. But ordinary people practise only karma. The body was taken on for the sake of karma alone! ‘Karmānubandhīni manuṣyaloke.’ So, doing natural actions with this body, we must understand the divine principle of the Manas.

Dharma, artha, kāma and Mokṣa rest on Dharma alone

So every man must first of all enter the path of karma. We must do the actions that please God. What pleases God? Whatever work we do, we must feel, ‘I am doing this for the pleasure of God.’ First of all, reflect: ‘Will the work I am doing please God or not?’ First of all you must watch for the contentment of your inner Ātma. Having tested yourself in this way, you must then go forward. Whatever work we do, we must do it with purity of citta. We must never enter into this at the urging of others or under the pressure of others. For you it is the source that comes from inside, not the force that comes from outside. In services of this kind our Subrahmaṇya Shetty has gone on doing much to further the work of the Pādukās.
