Passage 11

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

But how must we do these acts of service?

Not tapas, not pilgrimages, not the śāstras, not japa: for crossing the ocean of saṃsāra there is nothing but the service of the good.

We must serve the good. Not the service of the wicked. But you may think, ‘Swami, did You not say there are no wicked people?’ As long as there is worldly vision, we may think of the good and the wicked as separate. But when the pure heart itself comes to us, all are good! When that feeling of goodness arises in us, everything turns good. If we look well into our sacred histories, in the forests of those days wild beasts and ṛṣis went on living in the same place. The ṛṣis had no fear of these wild beasts. The wild beasts had no fear of the ṛṣis. Why? They had no hatred for those wild beasts. Nor had the beast any hatred for them. ‘Yad bhāvaṃ tad bhavati.’ Both went on living in unity in the same place. The ṛṣis had no bombs, no guns, no weapons of any kind. What weapon did the ṛṣis have? The weapon of Prema alone! By that weapon of Prema even the wild beasts went on turning to Prema. So when we keep a heart full of Prema within us, we do not see a wicked man at all. They too turn good. In the world, ‘Sarvejanā sukhino bhavantu’: all must be happy. All must be well. All must be full of Prema. There are no distinctions at all such as believers, unbelievers and believer-unbelievers. It is not right to think that the believer does pūjā and the unbeliever does not do pūjā. By these pūjās we cannot decide unbelief and belief. Wherever there is a pure heart, there is belief in God! Every good work is GOD's work. We must try to do good works. We must try to do works that do not hurt others. We must not use words that wound anyone. This morning Śāstri said it.
