Passage 16

In plain words

So we must install Him on the seat of the heart. His dwelling is the heart itself. That is why they gave Him the name Hṛdayavāsī. So give Him a place in the heart. Merely in the outer world, merely giving Him a place there, we are merely losing the opportunity; for as long as you look on your faith with outward vision, all this is paśyatīti paśuḥ. Outward vision belongs to the animal. We must develop inner vision. That itself is true sādhana. When you develop this sādhana, in everyone there is the one God alone. So whoever we greet, we must converse with them courteously and respectfully. We should not speak harshly to anyone. Then, when we speak harshly, we cannot recognise our own pain. You can’t always oblige but you can speak always obligingly. We must show such humility and deference. For God Himself is in the hearts of all. Whoever we criticise, we become people who have criticised God. Sarvabhūta tiraskāraṃ keśavaṃ pratigacchati; sarvajīva puraskāraṃ keśavaṃ pratigacchati; sarvajīva namaskāraṃ keśavaṃ pratigacchati.

We must put away evil qualities such as anger and vexation

So whatever we do, it reaches only the divinity in our heart. Anger, vexation, jealousy, envy, ostentation and all such evil qualities arise in man in many ways. We must not give them any room at all. The more room we give it, the further we go to ruin. When it comes, keep silent. Sit quietly for a while. Instead, if you answer word for word, that hatred grows all the greater. That is not the right quality. We must gain Śānti. And so, why do we say ‘śānti śśānti śśāntiḥ’ three times after bhajan? But why not say it twice? Or why not say it four times?
