In plain words
Who gives oxygen to the blood that moves through the body? What machine is at work? Who has set a machine to make your heart beat for 24 hours? All of it is nothing but God's creation. It is beyond all grasp. It is beyond the understanding of anyone who sets out to understand it. God created such a creation, created humanness specially within this creation, gave this humanness the intelligence fit for it as well, and with this intelligence gave a special Jñāna. The Veda called this very thing “Prajñānaṃ brahma.” Constant Integrated Awareness is what never changes. It is what stays steady at any time at all. It is what stays without changing in any way. I have given such a Buddhi.
The Power of Intellect and the Power of Buddhi
Once Vikramāditya called many scholars and went on inquiring, ‘Is the power of intellect greater, or is Buddhi greater?’ Many great scholars came into this assembly, and every one of them said, ‘The power of intellect is not greater; Buddhi alone is greater.’ No one is able to recognise a Buddhi so great. The power of intellect, with its cleverness, is something that just comes and goes from moment to moment. It is not something that lasts. It is merely a natural power of intellect, a worldly power of intellect, a power of intellect that makes the world known. But Buddhi is not that. It is not possible for anyone to recognise it. We think Buddhi is the power of discerning the eternal from the transient. No, no. I told you this earlier. This Buddhi has five aspects. The very first is śraddhā. The second is Ṛta. The third is Satya. The fourth is yoga. Then comes the mahat-tattva. This Buddhi is endowed with such powers. How can a Buddhi endowed with so many powers be called lesser? But people in this world cannot recognise so great a truth, and so, if someone does anything wrong, they say, ‘You have no buddhi, fellow!’ For every little task they lean on buddhi. When someone does a good deed, they say, ‘This fellow is a man of buddhi!’ Has this fellow become a man of buddhi through those silly deeds? To give this the name buddhi is not fitting. This is not Buddhi at all; this is the power of intellect.
