In plain words
The Fault in Food
After the Pāṇḍavas had won the victory, Kṛṣṇa took them to their grandfather Bhīṣma and had him teach the Śānti Parva. Bhīṣma was very happy. While everyone sat in silence, Bhīṣma was teaching in many ways. They were listening to all of it with śraddhā and Bhakti. That very Parva which Bhīṣma taught is the Śānti Parva. ‘My dear ones! All people must live in this way. They must dwell in this way. They must lead their lives in this way,’ he was teaching. While everyone was listening in calm silence, Draupadī burst out laughing. Yet she was one who knew the dignity of an assembly, one of very great virtue. She knew the good ways of society well, she knew the Jñāna of discernment, she had Viveka, she had discernment. Bhīma was angry: what reason could such a person have for laughing in this assembly? Arjuna was angry. Dharmarāja hung his head. They were all very pained that an act so shameful to them all had taken place. But Bhīṣma knew why Draupadī had laughed. Gently he called Draupadī near. ‘Child! People are making all sorts of meanings of your laughter. People are crows. Unable to recognise the truth, people take to doing things like this. Tell them plainly the reason for your laughter and clear their doubt,’ he said. Then, honouring Bhīṣma's command: ‘Grandfather! All these teachings you are now teaching should have been taught to the Kauravas, who are wicked and evil. But my husbands are souls steeped in Dharma, pure of heart, with hearts that are steady and selfless. There is no need to teach such people these counsels. All this time you have been the master of the Kauravas. You have been the commander of the Kauravas' army. Why did you not teach all these teachings to the Kauravas? When I wondered what the inner meaning could be of teaching them to the Pāṇḍavas, who have put all your teachings into practice, I felt like laughing,’ she said. Then Bhīṣma says, ‘Mother! There is reason and truth in your laughing. But because I was near the Kauravas all this time, because I joined the company of the Kauravas, because I ate the food the Kauravas gave me, because I took up the bad company of the Kauravas, my feelings and my blood turned to bad feelings.
