For man's progress, strength of mind and purity of the citta are most necessary. Strength of mind and purity of the citta alone can change humanness into divinity. For man, the mind itself is the root and support. For the mind, resolves alone are the support. Only by the power of his resolves can man make his own deeds turn out good or bad. Only when the power of a resolve falls on the mind do all the senses in a man follow that very power of the resolve. Man's life is nothing but the fruit of his resolves. When we throw a small stone into a pond, ripples start up in the pond. Whether we see those waves or not, they spread all over the whole face of the pond. In the same way, when the stone called man's resolve falls into the lake of the mind, the ripples of that lake of the mind spread everywhere. So too, when the waves enter the mouth as good ones, he utters good words. Or when those resolves are bad ones, he utters wicked, evil words. When they enter the openings of the ears, he takes in either evil sounds or good sounds. When they enter the eyes, one or the other begins: good sight or evil sight. When these resolves enter the hands, he does bad deeds or good deeds. When they enter the feet, he goes either into bad company or into good company. So these resolves themselves are the root of a man's good and bad. Man today longs for God. He remembers God. He contemplates God. But by this much alone God does not come within his reach. God is not so easily pleased just because you remember Him.
