In plain words
Only when this purity of the citta is formed is the attainment of Jñāna won. First of all, Vairāgya. Vairāgya means that you should form ties just so far as they are needed. It is not possible to live in this world by leaving everything. We must take up Vairāgya just so far as is fitting. Vairāgya without limit brings danger. If there is no limit, it brings on danger. So we must try to live human life in balance. Once upon a time the Gopīs prayed to Kṛṣṇa. ‘Kṛṣṇa! Saying You were up to all sorts of mischief, Your mother tried many times to beat You. Then You would run off somewhere and try to hide. Kṛṣṇa! There is one place, a fit place, where You will not be beaten by Your mother and which will fill our heart with joy. If You go in there, Your mother will not see You. You will not be a target for blows. You will make our heart shine. So there is one fit place for You to hide. That very place is our heart. Our heart is sinking in the darkness of Ajñāna. No Prajñāna of any kind shows itself in us. So enter our heart, make our heart shine, and give us this help,’ they said. That is just why God won the everlasting fame of being the Dweller in the Heart. What is the inner meaning of this outward Dīpāvali? The capital of the kingdom of the demon called Narakāsura was Prāgjyotiṣapura. Prāg means before. Jyoti means light. Ṣa means forgetting. Prāgjyotiṣapura means this: those who have forgotten the light that was before them live in this Prāgjyotiṣapura. What does the light before them mean? That itself is the light of the Ātma. Those who have forgotten the light of the Ātma make their home in Prāgjyotiṣapura. Narakāsura forgot the principle of the Ātma, built up the principle of the body, let the feeling that the body is the self grow strong, and went on spending his time in darkness of this kind. We must make the light of the Ātma grow, we must make our attachment to the Ātma grow, and not our attachment to the body. This very attachment to the body brings many hardships, losses and sorrows. The root cause of so many evils is none other than this attachment to the body.
