Passage 10

In plain words

They go on looking only to an acquaintance with books. But women are not like that. They go on looking to an acquaintance of the heart. If any of the children is a little unwell, the women who are teachers go to their home and ask how the child is. ‘Our student has had a fever; how is he, we wonder?’ So they walk to his home and keep asking after the child's welfare. These men teachers, if a student does not come to class, do not ask where he has gone. So the Prema they have is only this much. This Prema must grow in men too. Only then will this equality of all come to us. In men there is too much Ahaṅkāra. This very Ahaṅkāra is spoiling the nature of men. There is this: I am the officer, I am the great one, I am the master. You are indeed the master of the house, you are indeed the officer; no one has said you are not. But at the time of teaching the child you must teach gently and sweetly.

The officers themselves are the root cause of the world going to ruin like this today. They do not use this authority in the right way. Promotion comes, to the rank of a high officer. And there, where are the human qualities this officer ought to think about? ‘I am such a big officer. I get such a salary. Am I doing work fit for this life, or not?’ So he must put the question to himself. You take as much salary as you want from the government. You do not do even an atom's worth of work for the government. You are becoming one who has cheated the country itself. But women are not doing so. Though they take little, they do more work. Enquire anywhere you like. I have enquired many times in many factories. In Bangalore there is a telephone facility. In that factory all are women. When that chairman came to Me, I asked, “Why should you not take boys?” Then from him: “Swami! The work a boy does is of no use at all. Even ten boys do not do the work one girl does,” he answered. If they set their minds on anything, they set themselves to achieve it.
