In plain words
Anger Is the Cause of a Fall: The Story of Jarāsandha
When anger comes to a man even once, the strength gained from eating three months’ food is burnt to ash all at once. Anger makes the blood in the body boil. It takes three months to cool down. If anger comes at every turn, life itself is ruined.
The story of Jarāsandha is a fine example of this. Many times Kṛṣṇa went to war against Jarāsandha. By the time Jarāsandha came to the battlefield in fury, Kṛṣṇa would run away. To the question “Lord! Why are You running away in fear of Jarāsandha?” Kṛṣṇa gave a fine answer. “It is not that I am unable to slay Jarāsandha. But I do not like to fight with him. So I am killing him without fighting,” He said. When He was asked, “Lord! How can You kill him without fighting?” Kṛṣṇa: “Jarāsandha is immensely strong. To slay him, you must first make him weak. For that, you must make him angry often. That is why I pretend, time and again, to go to war against him, make him angry, and at once run away. Running away like this is no disgrace to Me at all. It is indeed an honour to Me. For I am making the enemy weak without using weapons,” He said. Every time Kṛṣṇa went to war, the anger in Jarāsandha went on growing. As a result his body grew weaker and weaker. Whatever plan God makes, whatever He does, it is only for the good of others! But to the eyes of some it may look bad. That is only the fault of their sight; there is no fault at all in God’s action.
The Greatness of the Varalakṣmī Vrata
When they observe the Varalakṣmī vrata, women receive the blessings “Dīrghasumaṅgalī bhava, putrapautrābhivṛddhir astu, āyurārogyaiśvaryābhivṛddhir astu.” This vrata protects seven generations on this side and seven on that, fourteen generations in all. That is why Īśvara made known to Pārvatī the greatness of this vrata and asked her to have women observe it and to grant them plenty and good fortune.
