Passage 3

In plain words

Embodiments of Prema! Prārabdha seizes and torments you only because you set apart from one another the four puruṣārthas, Dharma, Artha, Kāma and Mokṣa. You must turn these four into two. Only then can you keep from giving way to the prabhāva called prārabdha. You must make the two, Dharma and Artha, one; you must make the two, Kāma and Mokṣa, one. That is, you must gain Artha on the path of Dharma; you must make the longing for Mokṣa grow. But you give way to a longing for moha and fall prey to prārabdha.

Self-confidence is the first step to Ānanda

Man wants Ānanda. What is the way to Ānanda? What kind of Ānanda does he want? Is it the joy that comes from the things of this world? No, no. That is temporary. If you want Ānanda, you must first of all develop self-confidence. Through self-confidence Prema is gained. Only because the child believes, “This is my mother,” is it able to love its mother. Only through the faith, “This is my husband,” is the wife able to love her husband. So Prema arises only where there is faith. Only when Prema arises does Śānti prevail. For Śānti there is no need to perform pūjās and vratas. Śānti is not gained through them. Many people say they are performing vratas for the peace of the world. All of that is an out-and-out “stunt!” Śānti is not somewhere else; it is held within Prema itself. From faith comes Prema, from Prema Śānti, from Śānti Satya. Where Satya is, there God is. For Satya is the very form of God! Where God is, there Ānanda is; so what Ānanda needs first of all is self-confidence. But the man of today has no self-confidence at all. Faith in impermanent things keeps growing, but faith in God, who is eternal and true, does not take hold. You must give no room at all to doubts about God. You must trust God alone; in this world you must trust no one else.

Recognise that Ānanda is within you

All that is seen will vanish one day or another. The lasting truth is Ānanda alone.
