In plain words
Sesame and jaggery keep away the diseases that come from vāta, pitta, śleṣma and the like.
Man today has learned to worship Vināyaka, but he does not recognise in the least the inner meaning of that worship. Worship of Vināyaka gives man much joy, health and an ideal; it nourishes intelligence; it increases the power of memory. That is why on this day students worship Vināyaka a great deal. More than this, musicians begin their performance precisely with a prayer to Vināyaka. If you forget Vināyaka, you cannot escape ruin.
Man today strives merely for passing happiness and pleasure, but he makes no effort to attain lasting Ānanda. Lasting happiness and Śānti come through prayer to God alone, and by no other way.
Vināyaka is right within you
Embodiments of Prema! In your very heart is the pot-bellied Vināyaka. First of all, you must recognise that Vināyaka principle. You must keep Vināyaka in mind constantly. All the gods worship Vināyaka. Śaivas and Vaiṣṇavas too worship Vināyaka. Vināyaka is the embodiment of all the gods. Vināyaka is the embodiment of the essence of all religions. Only when you recognise this truth and act on it will you be blessed. Today is Vināyaka Caturthī; Vināyaka means the one who has no leader. Anyone at all has a leader, but Vināyaka has no leader. He himself is the ‘leader’ of all. You must follow such a ‘leader’. When the ‘leader’ is good, the goal too will be good. But the leaders of today are not as they should be. Who, in fact, is your real leader? Your ‘conscience’ itself is your leader. Today you are soiling your mind with evil thoughts, bad habits and evil vāsanās. Vināyaka is the one who treads down the vāsanās. The mouse always goes about sniffing at smells. Because Vināyaka is the one who treads down the vāsanās, he has put the mouse beneath him. That is, he has made the mouse his mount. All the sages have gone on worshipping such a one, whose mount is the mouse.
