In plain words
In the same way, only when you learn both worldly learning and the higher learning can you reach the heights in life. In our daily life the ‘left hand’ cleans away dirt; the ‘right hand’ carries out the work of duty. For every task we use the ‘right hand’. So with the ‘right hand’ do only right deeds. The ‘left’ goes back; the ‘right’ comes forward. The ‘left’, the world, must be given up some day or other: it has to be left; but the ‘right’, the spiritual, is always right! The fundamental principle called “I” must be recognised. That is the goal of your life. It is within you. Recognise it. How is it to be recognised? It is to be recognised only through Buddhi. Because Buddhi is the reflection of the Ātma. Buddhi has the power of enquiry; it decides between good and bad. To eat a mosambi, we peel off the rind, throw it away and take only the juice inside. You must have seen it: before it eats a banana, even a monkey strips the skin and throws it away. In the same way, man must take in the good and cast away the bad. Born a human being, what use is it to live like a beast, like a monkey? Yet there is one lesson man must learn even from a beast. It goes into a field and quickly eats everything within reach of its mouth; when it has reached its own place it chews the cud slowly and swallows. In the same way, wherever in the world man sees good, he must take it in without the least delay. Then he must reflect on it and put it into practice. Beasts, birds and animals, which know no learning of any kind, follow their own nature; but man, who has studied so much, forgets his ‘own’ nature and behaves like the greatest of fools. When the fundamental principle of the Ātma is not recognised, what use is it to score a hundred out of a hundred in physical sciences such as physics, chemistry and mathematics? You can fill your head with what is in the book, vomit it out in the exam and get good marks. But how many marks did you get in the spiritual? First class in physical learning, zero marks in the spiritual!
