Passage 3

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Yet through these very worries one is able to find happiness. A man with no worries at all gains no happiness. Joy is found only between two pains. If joy is to come without pains, that is never possible. Divinity lies in humanness itself. The divine power that is in man is seen nowhere else. Keeping so great a divine power within himself, man is unable to use it. The power of man's Buddhi is very great. Vijñāna is greater still than that. We must first of all understand the principle of these two.

The inner meaning of the offering of kuḍumulu and uṇḍrāḷḷu

On this festival day they steam rice flour, without cooking it on the fire or in oil, put jaggery and sesame flour in it, make kuḍumulu and uṇḍrāḷḷu, and offer them to Vināyaka as naivedya. What is the inner meaning of this? One who eats food prepared without the fire and without oil enjoys good health always. Sesame helps to prevent diseases of the eye. Things cooked over steam nourish the power of digestion. They keep away diseases such as blood pressure and diabetes. Food cooked on the fire and in oil weakens the power of digestion and leads to illness. So, to live in health for a long time, you must cut down cooking on the fire and in oil.

The belief that by worshipping Vināyaka on this Bhādrapada Caturthī day His grace is received abundantly and in full has been growing among the people since time out of mind. Since all obstacles are removed by the worship of Vināyaka, Vināyaka has the name Vighneśvara. Vināyaka brings benefit in terms of pravṛtti and of nivṛtti alike. Pravṛtti concerns the body. Nivṛtti concerns the Buddhi. Pravṛtti keeps changing, but nivṛtti never changes. So, through right food and right ways of living, we must gradually reduce our attachment to the body.
