In plain words

But today's students forget their duty and behave without discipline. What use is it to study high learning and behave basely? With great learning there must also be great conduct. One must lead a simple life. This is the very mark of the truly educated. Once Gandhiji was holding a book in his hand and shedding tears. An Englishman who came there just then asked, “Gandhiji! What is the reason for your grief?” Then Gandhiji: “My son! Modern education is not fostering character in students. It is making the heart hard. I am grieved to think how many troubles my country will have to face through such education,” he said.

Students! A great difference is seen between ancient times and the modern age. Some say that they behave as suits this modern age. This age may be modern, but your conduct must follow the ancient culture. Only then will your education receive the honour it deserves. You must honour your parents. If any elders come to your home, you must receive them with humility and obedience. You must speak with them softly and sweetly. By your conduct you must guard your parents' honour. One who has no humility and obedience cannot be a student; one may well say he is a stupid. Where students are, the atmosphere must be peaceful, with no room for disturbance and riots. But today elders are afraid even to go where students are. What is the reason? The fear of what mischief they may make! In the past students conducted themselves with humility and good sense. But the condition of today's students is the complete opposite of that. The root cause of this is modern education itself. Education that does not foster morality and honesty, Bhakti and surrender, brings no benefit to the country.
