In plain words
This is the very reason divinity lies hidden in man! Like man, beasts, birds and animals also long for joy and enjoy it. But there is a difference between the joy man enjoys and the joy beasts, birds and animals enjoy. Beasts, birds and animals do not swell up at pleasure or sink down at sorrow. They keep an even mind towards pleasure and pain. But in man there is no such evenness. Unable to curb vices such as lust and anger, man falls. Lust is a blight worm; anger is a root worm. These two together are wasting away the tree of human life. Lust and anger are man's worst enemies. These two alone are the most wicked planets that seize man and torment him! Desires beyond limit are creating great danger. Desires there must be! But they must have a limit. It has been said, ‘Na śreyo niyamaṃ vinā.’ In man today anger comes one moment, and Prema is born the next. Prema that is born and dies like this, from moment to moment, is not Prema. These are only disturbances that come from food and habits! Whatever resolve arises in you, you must not put it into action at once. Take some time: ‘Is this good? Or bad?’ This is how you must enquire.
‘Brahmā gives it you and sends you forth: a heavy garland...’
You are joyfully keeping the festival, because a new year has begun today. But this joy does not last even one whole day. This is not the Ānanda we should experience. What comes and goes from moment to moment, like a passing cloud, cannot be Ānanda. The Ānanda we experience must be lasting.
