In plain words
For the sake of money man plays any number of games. He puts his honour, his dignity and his joy up for sale in the bazaar. The more he earns, the further contentment moves from him. But animals are not like that. They gather as much food as they need and are content. The moment their stomachs are full, even animals leave the green grass alone. But man is not like that. The more he eats, the more he wants, ‘more, more,’ and he keeps enlarging his stomach.
Look at pet dogs anywhere. When those dogs have a fever, even if we force their mouths open and pour in milk, they will not drink it. They know they have a fever and keep away from food; they fast. Animals too keep to a diet when they are unwell; they will not eat whatever is put before them. And now look at man... Let him have a slight fever and he lies down with a blanket over his head. But he will not keep to a diet; he eats what he should not and makes the illness worse. Today the ways of human beings have passed to the beasts. The ways of the beasts have passed to human beings. When a child misbehaves, the elders scold him, ‘What, boy! You are behaving like a beast.’ The conduct of man today is sinking lower day by day. This is the influence of modern education!
The students of today study for B.A.s and M.A.s and keep adding to their degrees. But to those degrees they add the letter D, that is, Dirty qualities, and turn into BAD and MAD. Good qualities, good conduct, right behaviour and good thoughts must grow in man. Money comes and goes, but morality comes and grows. But today people sell their morality and integrity in the bazaar; they behave worse than the beasts. First of all, man must change his conduct.
Embodiments of Prema! At least from this Sankrānti onward, nurture good qualities. All the holy days of Bhārata came into being to teach the highest morals, not merely so that we may make pāyasam and paramānnam and eat them.
