Passage 3

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Why strut so over this much study and no more! How must we respect elders? How must we conduct ourselves in society? How must we serve society? Without knowing these, students only build up their acquaintance with books. This is ‘artificial’ education. The whole life of today's students is nothing but ‘artificial’. The food they eat, the thoughts they think, the words they speak, the deeds they do: all of it is ‘artificial’. Must one go to college to learn this kind of education! You must ask yourselves, ‘What did I come to college for?’ Only then can you become truly educated. Today's educated people take what is in the book into the head; they write what is in the head into a book. In this way they waste their time between the two, the book and the head, but they do not put into practice the learning they have learnt. The books are full, with learning in plenty; the heads are full, with mud aplenty! When the head is not pure, what is gained by reading however many books? Today everyone is studying. They spend many thousands on study. But what is the result that has come of it? What is the work the educated are doing? Are they fostering any peace in society? Are they setting individuals right in any way? In fact, there is no discipline even in the homes of the educated. Children behave very humbly before their parents; look outside, and they go about like out-and-out rowdies. Children must earn a good name not only at home but outside too.

What is said does not matter most; only what is done matters most

All the study today's students do is only for the outer world! No one takes any account of the teaching of the Ātma that rises from within. The teaching of the Ātma itself is true education. Without following it, however many studies one studies, there is no gain. Today's educated people go on showing off their influence, but no one thinks about purity of heart.
