Passage 5

In plain words

A clock has three hands; one keeps whirling round, ‘quick’. That is the second hand. When sixty seconds pass, it makes one minute. When sixty minutes pass, it makes one hour. Yet we give importance only to the hour hand, and pay no attention to the second hand. Though the second hand goes round at speed, we give it no value. In the same way, if you think of God only for some little while, morning and evening, that has no great value. Always, at all times, everywhere, you must keep God in mind. That alone, like the hour hand, is very important.

‘Manayeva manuṣyāṇāṃ kāraṇaṃ bandha mokṣayoḥ’: the mind itself brings bondage. That same mind gives us Mokṣa. So you must keep the mind in the proper way. Then concentration will surely come to you. You must make the mind pure through Satya and through Prema. For these two alone are eternal. Prema itself is Satya. So live in Prema. Prema means ‘spiritual love’. Only when you keep it safe does the mind gain steadiness. Worldly love is not Prema. It keeps the mind unsettled all the time. So keep your mind turned constantly towards God alone. Then you will find Śānti in full measure. Many people think this is very difficult. But there is nothing easier than this. When the mind is not on God, it does not come under control at all. If Prema for God truly grows in you, your mind comes under control easily. Whatever you do, whatever you see, whatever you say, you must think, ‘All this is God's work alone.’ Whatever happens, you must think, ‘All this is God's will!’ When good happens, it is God's will; when evil happens, it is God's will just the same! Who knows for what purpose He gave even that evil! As the saying goes, “Holding pleasure and pain, gain and loss, victory and defeat as alike”, you must go through everything with an even mind and with Prema for God. When you follow that ‘divine love’, everything goes right for you.
