Privacy

Tatpada is a reading app. What follows is the whole of what it stores about you and why — there is no separate practice this page is summarising for a shorter answer elsewhere.

Reading without an account

You do not need to sign in to read. Your appearance choices, where you were reading in each realm, and the passages you have kept are stored only in your own browser. None of it is sent anywhere, seen by us, or shared with anyone. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes all of it; “Forget what I have kept” in Settings clears your kept passages alone.

Everything the site needs — its pages, fonts, pictures and search — is served from Tatpada itself. While you read, your browser does not contact any other website, so no one else learns what you are reading.

If you sign in

Signing in is optional, and exists for one reason: so the device you are reading on now and a second device both see the same shelf. You can sign in with Google, or with an email and password. Either way, we receive the email address your account uses, and — if you sign in with Google — the name Google reports for you.

Once signed in, the following start syncing between your devices, in place of staying on one:

  • the passages you have kept
  • your favourites
  • where you were reading, in each text
  • reading plans you have started
  • places you have marked
  • per-text preferences, such as which layers you read a work with
  • appearance — theme and text size, but not a per-screen layout choice, which stays with the device it belongs to

Nothing else about your reading is sent to us. There is no analytics, no advertising, and nothing here is shared with or sold to anyone.

Where it's stored

Synced data is held by Supabase, the database provider this app runs on, behind row-level security keyed to your own signed-in account — no other reader can see it, and we do not read it either, outside of fixing a real fault you report to us. It travels only over an encrypted connection. When you sign in, the only other site your browser talks to is that database, and, for Google sign-in, Google.

Your data, and deleting it

In Settings, while signed in, “Download my data” saves a copy of everything your account holds as a single file, and “Delete account” deletes your account and everything synced to it, permanently. Either takes effect straight away, without writing to anyone.

Signing out is different: it stops syncing and leaves everything on your device exactly as it was, without deleting your account. “Switch account” saves your reading to your account first and then clears it from the device, so it is never merged into the next person's. Deleting your account likewise leaves this device's copy in place; clearing this site's data in your browser removes that too.

Children

Tatpada is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.

If what this page describes changes, this page changes with it — there is no separate changelog to check.
