Letters of Swami Vivekananda

You were a cow, you have become a man

Revered sir,

You lament, “What has come of doing sevā for the sādhus?” That is right, and yet it is not right. If you look toward ideal bliss, it is true enough; but the moment you look back at the place you have left behind, you will see: you were a cow, you have become a man, and you will become a god, and God. Besides, this kind of “What has come of it? What has come of it?” is a very good thing. It is itself the hope of progress; without it no one can rise. The man who sees himself as God the moment he ties on a turban is finished right there. Since “What has come of it?” keeps coming back to your mind, you are blessed, know that for certain — no ruin can come to you.

Balarambabu, if the Holy Mother has come, give her my millions and millions of praṇāmas, and ask her to bless me: that I may have unshakable perseverance, or, if that is impossible in this body, that this body may fall soon.

Your servant,

Narendra.
