This life, this body, bought outright

My dear brother,

Dada, suppose Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was a sham after all; suppose taking refuge in him was one big mistake. But what is to be done now? So one life goes to waste. Does a man go back on his word? Can a wife have ten husbands? Go, each of you, and join whatever party you please; I have no objection, none at all. But I have gone round this world, and I see that in every house but his it is ‘theft in the house of the heart’. For his people I have a love that is total, a faith that is total. What can I do? Say I harp on one string if you like, but that is the heart of the matter for me. If a thorn pricks the foot of anyone who has surrendered himself to him, I feel it in my bones; everyone else I love. Few in this world are as unsectarian as I am, but that much is my bigotry; forgive me. Whose name shall I swear by, if not his? In the next life we may look around for some bigger Guru; this life, this body, that fool of a Brahmin has bought outright.

I have spoken out what is in my gut, Dada; don't be angry. I am your slave so long as you are his slaves; step one hair outside that and you and I are equals. … All these societies and what-not that you see at home and abroad, he has already swallowed them whole, Dada: ‘By me alone these have already been slain; be only the instrument, O Savyasachin.’ Today or tomorrow all of that will be absorbed into your own body. Alas, how little faith! By his kṛpā ‘the whole universe shrinks to the print of a cow's hoof.’ Don't be false to his salt; there is no prāyaścitta for that sin. Name, fame, good works, whatever oblation you offer, whatever tapas you practise, whatever you eat, and so on: lay it all at his feet. What more do we want? He has given us śaraṇa; what more do we want? Bhakti is itself the fruit; what more is there to want? O brother, he fed us and clothed us, gave us sense and learning and made men of us; he opened the eyes of the Ātman; you saw him day and night as the living God; his purity and prema and glory showed only a speck of themselves in Rama, Krishna, Buddha, Jesus, Chaitanya and the rest; and to him you would be ungrateful!!! Your Buddha, Krishna and the rest are three-quarters legend and nothing more, … you forget the dayā of such a Thakur! … There is no proof at all that Krishna and Jesus were ever born; and you, who have seen Thakur face to face, still lose your wits now and then! Shame on your lives!! What more am I to say? At home and abroad atheists and pāṣaṇḍas are offering pūjā to his picture, and you lose your wits from time to time!!! He will make lakhs and lakhs like you with a single breath. Blessed is your birth, blessed your family, blessed your country, that you have had the dust of his feet. What can I do? I am forced to be a bigot. For nowhere but in his people do I see purity and unselfishness. Everywhere it is theft in the house of the heart, except in his house. He is protecting me, I can see it. You madcap, girls lovely as fairies, lakhs and lakhs of rupees: all this is turning to nothing for me. Is that by my own strength? Or is it that he is protecting me? Apart from his people I would not trust anyone with a single rupee, or near a single woman. Whoever has no faith in him and no bhakti for the Holy Mother will come to nothing, not so much as a horse's egg. I have said it in plain Bengali; remember it.

What more need I say?

Narendra.
