Forward, forward, O heroes

May all be well with you. With my blessing and a loving embrace, may this letter bring you joy. This cage of mine, made of the five elements, is a little healthier now. I believe the snow-crowned peaks of the king of mountains bring even the half-dead back to life. And I feel that my weariness, too, has somehow lifted. The mumukṣutva that so stirs your heart, which shows through the very turn of your writing, I have felt before. It is that very mumukṣutva that grows until it settles the mind in the eternal Brahman. "There is no other path to go by." Let that contemplation blaze higher and higher, until the whole store of deeds, done and left undone, is utterly worn away. Then, all at once, Brahman shines forth, and every viṣaya is swept away with it. That jīvanmukti is on its way to you, for your good; the very firmness of your love is proof of it. And I pray, further, to that loka-guru, the ācārya of the great harmony, the most revered Sri Ramakrishna, to reveal Himself in your heart, so that, fulfilled in every aim and with a great heroism brought forth in you, you may strive wholeheartedly to lift people out of the ocean of mahāmoha. Be rooted in ojas for ever. Mukti lies in the palm of the hero alone, never of the coward. O heroes, gird up your loins! Before you stand the enemies, in the shape of mahāmoha. Even though it is certain that "the good is beset with many obstacles", strive all the harder. Look at these people, caught in the jaws of the crocodile of moha. Listen, ah, listen to their cry of grief, so piteous it breaks the heart. Forward, forward, O heroes! Go to loose the noose of the bound, to lighten the burden of the poor, to light up the dark well in the hearts of the ignorant. "Abhīḥ! Abhīḥ!" So thunders the drum of Vedānta. May it split open the knots of the heart of all who dwell in the world.

Wishing you nothing but good,

Vivekananda.
