In plain words

Listen, Arjuna — I will tell you about that enemy, the one behind every kind of harm, the very thing you're asking about. So said the Blessed Lord —

'Complete lordship, righteousness, fame, splendor, dispassion, liberation — these six together are called bhaga' — that is how the Purāṇa puts it. And that entire sixfold fullness lives eternally and without limit in Vāsudeva. 'The one who knows how beings arise and dissolve, come and go, and who knows both knowledge and ignorance — that one is rightly called Bhagavān.' Vāsudeva, whose knowledge holds all of this — arising, passing, coming, going, knowledge, ignorance — is exactly the one that word points to.

This is desire — the enemy of the whole world — the very cause behind everything that goes wrong for a living being. And when that same desire gets blocked, it simply turns into anger. So anger, too, is born from rajas, that restless quality — desire is rajas taking shape, or something rajas throws off. Once desire has arisen, it sets rajas moving and that movement drives a person to act. 'Craving made me do it' — that's the complaint you hear from people caught up in serving their own restlessness. Desire has a vast appetite — that's what the name means — and because its appetite is vast, so is the harm it does: driven by desire, a person commits wrong. So know this: desire, right here in this life, is your enemy.

Listen — you [shall hear of] that enemy, the causer of every harm, whom you ask about. Thus the Blessed Lord said —

'Of complete lordship, of righteousness, of fame, of prosperity, of dispassion, and of liberation — of these six, bhaga is the designation' (Viṣṇu Purāṇa 6.5.74). The sixfold group beginning with lordship abides eternally and in its entirety, unconditioned, in Vāsudeva. 'He who knows origination and dissolution, and the coming and going of beings, and knowledge and ignorance — he is to be called Bhagavān' (Viṣṇu Purāṇa 6.5.78). And Vāsudeva, whose understanding has as its scope origination and the rest, is to be called Bhagavān.

This is desire, the enemy of the whole world, on account of which all misfortune befalls living beings. That same desire, when obstructed by something, transforms into the state of anger. Therefore anger too is this very same thing, born of the quality of rajas — rajas is that quality, the quality [called] rajas, and its arising, of which that desire is born of the quality of rajas, or the product of the quality of rajas. For desire, once arisen, setting rajas in motion, impels a person to act. 'I was driven to this by craving' — such is the complaint heard from the miserable, engaged in the business of rajas, in servitude and the like. Of great appetite: its food is great — so 'of great appetite'; and for that very reason, of great sin — for a creature, driven by desire, commits sin. Therefore know this desire, here in this world, as the enemy.
