Passages 1–16

How can Mokṣa come to disciples who seek only softness, comfort, and sensory pleasure? What loss is there to a true Guru if such troublesome disciples do not gather around him? Yet there are Gurus who do feel a loss when such disciples disappear—“opium Gurus” and “gāñjā Gurus,” as the text sharply puts it. Fie! Such Gurus are not Gurus, and such disciples are not disciples. Those who deceive the world and labour for the stomach—how can they be Gurus? Those who seek luxury—how can they be disciples? They are Gurus of money and disciples intoxicated by pride. To call such people Guru and śiṣya brings disrepute upon the sacred word Guru. The true Guru gives Upadeśa that destroys moha. The true disciple strives to restrain viṣaya-vāsanās. Today some memorise Vedāntic language overnight and climb platforms by day, pouring out what they swallowed like parrots—or like food being brought back up. They pound the table declaring that Kāma, Krodha, and the other inner enemies must be crushed, while in their own smallest acts desire, anger, jealousy, hatred, and greed reveal themselves from moment to moment. If a Guru cannot restrain these in himself, how are disciples to grow through him? And when a genuinely renounced, even-minded, truthful, compassionate Guru teaches the good path with simplicity and seeks the welfare of all, only a few disciples may gather—and some of those may even doubt and misjudge him. The loss is not the Guru’s; it is the disciple’s. A disciple who will not relinquish deha-bhrānti, identification with the body, may travel through many lands, meet many teachers, meditate, repeat japa, and visit countless tīrthas, yet still fail to see God. Such Sādhana becomes like water poured into a vessel with a hole. In that sense, an ordinary householder who faithfully observes the Dharma of his or her āśrama, performs duty without wrongdoing, does not stray from the path, and remembers God may be far better established than a pretended ascetic. Endless volumes could be written about the failures of Gurus and disciples, but dwelling unnecessarily on such matters only wastes sacred time. Let us return to our subject. To imagine such defects in the Guru-disciple relationship of Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna would itself be a grave misunderstanding. There are no ordinary comparisons for those two. Blessed is the life that takes Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna as the measure of Guru and disciple. Arjuna is the pure disciple who receives the Guru’s word upon his head and lives it. Kṛṣṇa is the Guru who seeks the disciple’s good, honour, Ātmānanda, and Dharma, caring for him as for His own life. Paramātma Kṛṣṇa and jīvātma Arjuna becoming Guru and disciple—what fruit of countless lives could be greater? Kṛṣṇa is Puruṣottama; Arjuna, narottama. Kṛṣṇa’s Prema for Arjuna is immeasurable: He cherished him like the heart in the body, like the eye in the face; He loved, purified, and sanctified him. Such is a Guru. And Arjuna too was no ordinary disciple. His Tyāga was his own; in the most difficult hour he would not knowingly transgress Kṛṣṇa’s word. He regarded Kṛṣṇa’s well-being as his own and stood ready even to give his life. Such should be the spirit of Guru and disciple. Having described their qualifications, Kṛṣṇa now explains the power and fruit of Ātma-jñāna. “Kaunteya! Through the power of Jñāna, first see all beings in yourself, and then see them in Me. In this way ajñāna and moha fall away. As darkness disappears when the sun rises, ignorance disappears with the dawn of Jñāna.” “Bāvā! I know the whole course of your births. Your birth is not ordinary; it is endowed with daivī-sampat, a divine disposition, though this is not known to you. Because delusion has arisen, you condemn yourself, thinking, ‘I am committing terrible sin; I am killing relatives, Gurus, and elders.’ But tell Me—can one who has sinned never attain Jñāna? If wrong was committed in the past, sincere repentance can purify. Paramātma responds to true repentance with compassion and Prema. Did Ratnākara, burdened with former wrongdoing, not become Vālmīki? His very life stands as witness. Nor need one remain bound even to the fruits of Puṇya. The fire of Jñāna, like a blazing forest fire consuming every kind of wood, burns both puṇya- and pāpa-karma. Therefore, to gain this sacred Jñāna, one must possess Śraddhā.” “Śraddhā means faith and earnestness toward the śāstras, the Guru, and the gaining of Jñāna—but above all, you must have Śraddhā in yourself. Without it, a human being cannot accomplish even a small task. Then consider how essential it is for Jñāna, the sacred support of life. This Śraddhā is no ordinary thing. It is like an iron chest protecting the treasures of śama, dama, uparati, titikṣā, and samādhāna.” “Bāvā! Do you think Śraddhā alone is enough? No. There must also be real eagerness to understand what is taught, and neither of these should be accompanied by laziness. Even where Śraddhā and interest are present, harmful company can disturb the aspirant; therefore indriya-nigraha, mastery of the senses, is essential. Do not nourish doubt. Doubt can be even more destructive than lack of faith. Perform the action that has been taught without clinging to its fruit; then you practise Niṣkāma Karma. By relinquishing attachment to results you move toward Mokṣa established in Jñāna. One who acts with Īśvarārpaṇa-buddhi—offering doership and fruit to the Lord—is untouched by sin. As grease does not cling in the wrong place, as collyrium belongs to the eye, and as water does not cling to the lotus leaf, so the Niṣkāma Karma Yogī, though acting, seeing, and hearing, remains inwardly a non-doer. External enjoyments lead to passing pleasure and pain. You are Ātma, beyond all of them, Jñāna-svarūpa itself. You are not the ultimate doer of these actions; you are the witness. Abhimāna and mamakāra have created your doubt. Become established in Brahma-jñāna. Perform all action, but renounce its fruit. Karma-phala-tyāga is holier than merely abandoning action; Karma Yoga is greater than outward karma-sannyāsa; and Dhyāna Yoga is subtler still.” “Dhyāna Yoga needs the support of Karma Yoga; that is why Karma Yoga had to be taught first. Arjuna! One who performs duty while relinquishing the fruit is especially dear to Me; such a one is the true sannyāsī. One who merely abandons sacred fires and useful work, eats and sleeps in laziness, and continues to crave sense-pleasures is no sannyāsī dear to Me. I am far from laziness. However many practices a person performs, without renouncing binding saṅkalpas he does not become a Yogī. One who does not cling either to sense-objects or to the fruits of action becomes sarva-saṅga-parityāgī. Through such Niṣkāma Karma, Dhyāna Yoga becomes possible. An undisciplined Citta becomes one’s greatest enemy. Therefore become jitendriya. Seek solitude when needed and bring Citta and the senses under mastery. A horse without reins, an ox that will not accept the yoke, Sādhana without sense-control, and a river without water are all equally fruitless.” “Come, Bāvā! Practise Dhyāna Yoga. Keep regularity: do not constantly change the time, place, or method, and work steadily to restrain the mind. Order and consistency are major limbs of this Yoga. Do not alter practices merely according to whim. Meditation does not mature in one who overeats and exhausts the body, nor in one who starves and weakens it; neither in one who oversleeps nor in one who refuses sleep; neither in one who practises only when convenient—long today because there is free time and carelessly tomorrow because there is work. Nor will it bear fruit in one who gives free rein to kāma, krodha, and the other inner enemies; who wounds the hearts of parents; or, above all, who nourishes doubt and distrust toward Bhagavān or toward the Guru or Divine Form to whom the heart has been offered. Even ages of meditation cannot compensate for such contradiction.” “The Citta of the practitioner should be steady like a lamp in a windless place. Whenever Manas moves, gently but firmly bring it back and do not let it run unchecked. One who realises ‘I am in all, and all beings are in Me’ attains the essence of every Yoga. For such a one there is no ultimate division between ‘another’ and Paramātma. The pleasure and pain of others are felt as one’s own; one does not wound another heart, but loves all in the bhāva of Sarveśvara. Such a person is the highest among Yogīs.” As Kṛṣṇa taught this to His devotee Arjuna, Arjuna again raised a doubt. “Kṛṣṇa! Everything You say is beautiful to hear and blissful to contemplate, yet it does not seem easy for everyone to practise. If this Yoga of samatva is difficult even for powerful sādhakas, how can ordinary people like us accomplish it? And the mind—can it be called ordinary? Its strength is greater than an elephant’s; its restlessness truly deserves its name. Its agitation is fierce and stubborn. It cannot be held: it is like trying to tie up water in a bundle or clutch the wind in one’s fist. How can such a mind attain such a Yoga? One seems as hard as the other—stone meeting stone. Who can melt them, Kṛṣṇa?” Bhagavān smiled at these words. “Bāvā! You have observed the nature of Manas well. Yet even what seems impossible can gradually be brought under mastery through abhyāsa, enquiry, and Vairāgya. There is little in this world that sustained practice cannot accomplish. Place the burden upon Bhagavān, practise with Ātma-viśvāsa, and even great tasks become possible. One who pursues this Yoga with firm resolve, ripened through many births and purified of faults, reaches supreme Siddhi. Such a Yoga-siddha is greater than the merely austere, the merely learned, or the merely action-bound practitioner.” “Bāvā! Attain this sacred state of the Yogī. Yet there is a state still more blessed: the one who fixes Citta in Me and meditates upon Me with Śraddhā is the greatest Yogī. Dhyāna Yoga is an inward Sādhana leading toward Jñāna Yoga, and it has life only when filled with Śraddhā and Bhakti; otherwise it is like a wooden doll. All of this requires deep Prema for Bhagavān—that is Bhakti. For such Bhakti to become steady, one should know the guṇas, nature, and svarūpa of Bhagavān. Therefore I shall now explain these. Listen. I intend to give you śāstra-jñāna joined with anubhava-jñāna so fully that, knowing it, nothing essential remains unknown. Among thousands of aspirants, scarcely one strives for this sacred Jñāna; among thousands who strive, scarcely one truly knows Me. There is nothing higher than Me. Everything is strung upon Me like beads upon a thread.” “The five elements together with Manas, Buddhi, and Ahaṅkāra form the eightfold Prakṛti from which the subtle and inert universe is constituted. This is called Aparā Prakṛti. Yet there is another Prakṛti of Mine, distinct from this lower nature: Parā Prakṛti. It is not inert; it is the conscious principle appearing as jīva, and the whole universe is sustained by it. Aparā Prakṛti is jaḍa; Parā Prakṛti is Caitanya.” “The Vedas declare that Bhagavān first brings forth the inert universe and then enters it as jīva, making it conscious. Understand Aparā Prakṛti as the expressed nature of Parameśvara and Parā Prakṛti as His conscious Svarūpa; Svarūpa and svabhāva are not ultimately separate. The inert depends upon Consciousness; Consciousness is free in itself.” The inert is dependent; jīva is that which bears and manifests life. As Antaryāmin, the inner indweller, the living Consciousness enters all. Therefore Parā Prakṛti too is none other than Paramātma. What appears as inert and conscious is one Reality seen through two aspects. Their conjunction constitutes manifested Prakṛti: conscious power becomes the experiencer through karma, while inert Prakṛti takes bodily form. “Bāvā! Both are My Prakṛtis. Know Me as Īśvara, the source of the creation, sustenance, and dissolution of the universe through them. There is no thing and no ultimate Reality apart from Me. I am the root cause and the root substance. ‘Eko'haṁ bahu syām—I am One; may I become many.’ With the saṅkalpa of creation, movement arose in Māyā-śakti and became Mahat-tattva, the first transformation of Prakṛti. Think of a seed buried in earth: after water is given it softens and swells before a sprout appears. That first swelling is like Mahat. Then, by Divine saṅkalpa, the sprout emerges—Mahad-Ahaṅkāra—and from it come five branches, the subtle pañca-bhūtas. Prakṛti-śakti, Mahat-tattva, Ahaṅkāra, and the five elements together make eight. From these eight the inert universe is formed.”
