Passage 24

Passages 1–26

“Bāvā! Karma is My own Svarūpa. I Myself appear in the form of Karma,” Kṛṣṇa declared, making it unmistakably clear that action too is not outside Him. Then He said, “Arjuna, you now know Brahman, Adhyātma, and Karma as My own expressions. You will surely become free and attain Mukti. There is little time; let us move on.” Kṛṣṇa’s urgency is natural: the chariot stands on the battlefield, and much still remains to be done. But Arjuna is not one to let a question go. Had he been an ordinary person, he could not have continued questioning Kṛṣṇa in this way. Arjuna is fitted to Kṛṣṇa, and Kṛṣṇa to Arjuna; they are Nara-Nārāyaṇa. Their intimacy belongs to them and cannot be imitated casually. Unsatisfied with a partial answer, Arjuna prayed, “Tell me the remaining three as well. Free me from this thicket of doubt, remove the darkness, and show me Your form, Swāmi!” Paramātma, moved by compassion, reassured him: “Bāvā, do not worry. Listen. Adhibhūta is not an impossible mystery. Every name and form in the world that is subject to destruction is called Adhibhūta.” “Put another way, Aparā Prakṛti itself is Adhibhūta. All these bodies belong to Adhibhūta—and yet they are not truly separate from Me.” Having said this, He paused. The ways of Hari are known fully only to Hari. Arjuna stood bewildered; his head grew heavy, Buddhi slowed, Manas sank, and fresh doubts rose faster than he could grasp them. Kṛṣṇa had earlier declared, “I am Sat-Cit-Ānanda, the eternal Reality; I am indestructible, unborn, and deathless.” Now He says, “Even this perishing, unstable body is also Myself.” How could doubt not arise? Seeing Arjuna’s expression, Kṛṣṇa smiled all the more, while shame, irritation, and bewilderment mingled in Arjuna. Yet Kṛṣṇa did not wish to waste time. Knowing Arjuna’s heart, He immediately began to remove the doubt. “Bāvā! Is your confusion that I called this unstable body also Myself? To ordinary understanding it certainly sounds contradictory, but the relation becomes clear when you trace the body to its source. I am its Ādhāra; without Me, it cannot be. The gross body arises from food eaten by the parents. Where does food come from? From Pṛthvī, earth. Before becoming food-grain, it was earth. Trace earth backward and its support is Jala, water; trace water and Agni is its prior condition; trace Agni and Vāyu; trace Vāyu and Ākāśa; enquire into Ākāśa and its basis is Māyā. And Māyā is My upādhi. Do you see?” “Māyā, My upādhi, becomes Ākāśa; Ākāśa becomes Vāyu; Vāyu takes the form of Agni; from Agni comes Jala; from Jala, Pṛthvī; from Pṛthvī comes grain; grain becomes food; and food takes the form of the body. Through this chain, is it not clear how even the impermanent body ultimately rests in Me? Why then the doubt?” “So along with Brahman, Adhyātma, and Karma, Adhibhūta too is Myself. Follow the relation of cause and effect and these bodies called Adhibhūta also resolve into Me, Paramātma. Now remains Adhidaiva. Hiraṇyagarbha is called Puruṣa because He pervades the ‘cities’ that are all bodies. Present fully within all bodies, He is Hiraṇyagarbha; the presiding deities stand to Him as the senses stand to the human being.” “You may ask who these Adhidevatās are. They are deities embodying particular powers, attendants of Bhagavān: the Sun presides over sight, the directions over hearing, Indra over the hands, and so forth. These divine powers function as the cosmic senses of Hiraṇyagarbha. Sādhakas and great souls reach higher states through Hiraṇyagarbha. There is ultimately no difference between Bhagavān and Hiraṇyagarbha. Thus, just as Brahman, Adhyātma, Karma, and Adhibhūta are Myself, Adhidaiva also is Myself. They are not independent realities.” “And Adhiyajña too is Myself. The experiencer within every body who receives the fruits of action is Adhiyajña. The one Consciousness that, through the senses, experiences sound, touch, form, taste, and smell is both the inward knower and the apparent enjoyer. That Karta and Bhoktā, the Sarvāntaryāmin within every body, is Myself.” Kṛṣṇa opened Arjuna’s eyes to the meaning of Adhiyajña, though the idea may still seem subtle to an ordinary reader. A simple worldly example helps. For air we switch on a fan; for light, a bulb; for cooking, a stove; for amplified sound, an amplifier and microphone; for printing, a printing machine. Seen separately, these devices appear entirely different—air, light, heat, sound, and print seem unrelated. Yet one current of electricity powers them all. The appliances differ and their functions differ, but their support is one. As electricity stands behind many devices, the Supreme stands within all upādhis as the giver of the fruits of action. As Sarva-bhūtāntarātma and the ultimate ground of action, He Himself is Adhiyajña. Kṛṣṇa then taught the seventh point: whoever, at the time of the prāṇa’s departure, remembers and meditates upon Praṇava reaches Akṣara-Parabrahman. Arjuna asked Him to explain this more fully. “Bāvā! ‘The final time’ is not merely some remote future instant. For a perishing body every passing moment is, in a sense, an ending. Whatever is remembered at the final transition shapes the condition that follows and becomes a foundation for rebirth. One who remembers Me at that time attains My bhāva and reaches Me. Therefore every effort, every karma, every Sādhana of life should help prepare and refine the final remembrance. Practise now so that sacred thought—especially contemplation of Praṇava—arises naturally then.” “What must be relinquished is the body; what must be attained is Parabrahman. Whatever can be left behind cannot be your ultimate Svarūpa. That which cannot be relinquished or altered—the Satya and Nitya—is your true Svarūpa, called Ātma. That Ātma is Paramātma. No one can abandon It. Leaving a body is like moving from one house to another. Birth and death belong to the body, not to Ātma.” “Ātma neither comes nor goes. Bāvā! One caught in deha-bhrānti cannot grasp Ātma-tattva, because attention is fixed upon what is unstable. The deeper point is to know what bhāva and condition should be cultivated for the final passage. All Sādhana undertaken during life serves this preparation. Cause and effect are inseparable: as the life, so the remembrance. The sacred thought that comes at the end reflects what has been practised throughout life.” Arjuna asked, “Swāmi! If noble thought is needed at the end, must one begin practising from today? Can one not simply remember then?” Paramātma understood the doubt and replied: “Arjuna! If you ask this, you have not yet understood abhyāsa. A mind trained by Abhyāsa Yoga and withdrawn from scattered thoughts can turn toward the supreme Divine Person. Think of yourself: because you have trained in weapons for years, you can take them up today on the battlefield. Had you never learned archery and warfare, could you suddenly fight skilfully now? No. A Kṣatriya prepares beforehand for the battle that may one day come.” In the same way, whatever else may or may not come to a human being, death will certainly come. Therefore one must learn beforehand how to sanctify that moment through the right remembrance. One who has never prepared may simply be carried by whatever saṁskāra happens to arise. No one goes to battle intending defeat; no one desires a low state rather than a higher one. If we desire a particular destination, must we not prepare for it? Therefore every person should practise so that sacred thought arises at the time of departure. One who does so reaches Me, Paramātma teaches. The essence of the Gītā is gathered here. Why perform satkarma, prayer, japa, dhyāna, arcana, or tapas if not to move toward the highest good? Those who live with faith should understand this point deeply. For the final passage of prāṇa, Bhagavān especially enjoins remembrance of Oṁ, Praṇava. A further point requires care. Some create agitation by saying that only this group or that group may utter Oṁ. The text rejects such narrowness as arising from incomplete understanding and inherited assumption rather than clear knowledge. The Gītā does not say “these people” and “not those people.” Kṛṣṇa says whoever is qualified through Sādhana. He does not make tribe or sex the criterion. But He does state the qualification for Praṇava-dhyāna: merely saying “Oṁ” with the mouth is not enough. The senses should be mastered and Manas steadied in Bhagavān. If Manas wanders wildly while the lips repeat “Oṁ, Oṁ,” Paramātma is not attained through sound alone. The necessary fitness is cultivated throughout life through indriya-nigraha and Satya-anveṣaṇa. A student passes an examination at year’s end because study has been sustained throughout the year; one who ignores the book and teacher until examination day cannot expect the mind suddenly to become prepared. Likewise, planting a fruit seed does not immediately produce a mature tree laden with fruit. It must be protected, watered, and nourished through its seasons before fruit comes. Every attainment requires the appropriate prior karma. To neglect the causes and demand only the final fruit is futile. A sādhaka should therefore be concerned not merely with how to be born well, but with how to die well. The manner of death conditions what follows. Ordinary thinking says birth comes first and death later; spiritually, the text reverses the emphasis: one dies so as not to be compelled into another death, and birth is meaningful when it prepares freedom from rebirth. Where there is no rebirth, there is no further death. Therefore the sādhaka should seek a good and sacred end rather than merely a fortunate beginning. A good birth can still be followed by actions that turn life astray; but if the final passage is made sacred through right bhāva and Sādhana, the cycle itself can end. Keep the end in view from the beginning and cultivate the dispositions that make the final remembrance luminous. That is true grace for the sādhaka.
