Passage 4
Passages 1–22
1The Uttarāyaṇa path is called the Śukla-mārga because it is filled with the pure light of Jñāna. The Dakṣiṇāyana path is called the Kṛṣṇa-mārga because it is associated with Tamas and darkness rather than the light of knowledge. Those who depart by the first, luminous path reach Mokṣa—the abode of Brahmānanda, free of moha and beyond renewed embodiment. Those who travel by the dark path again obtain a body and return to the cycle of birth and death. 2Those who leave the body in the light of self-knowledge are spoken of as travellers on the Uttarāyaṇa path; those who depart without Ātma-jñāna, in delusion, follow the Pitṛyāna path. Sattva is to be understood as clear and luminous; Tamas as dark and obscuring. 3There is also an inner yogic symbolism in the two nāḍīs, Iḍā and Piṅgalā. Piṅgalā is on the right and is associated with the solar path; Iḍā is on the left and with the lunar path. Great yogins, through Yoga-śakti, are said to travel through Piṅgalā, while those without such yogic power follow the lunar Iḍā path. This is another inward meaning. 4Every conjunction ends in separation; one who is born dies, and one who dies is born again—this is the law of Prakṛti. The state beyond coming and going, beyond birth and death, is Brahma-sākṣātkāra-jñāna. Brahman is all-pervading; where, then, could there be a separate place from which It comes or to which It goes? 5Do not doubt whether this is possible for everyone. No extraordinary outward feat is required. Keep Manas continuously fixed on Paramātma; meditate on Bhagavān without break. Such uninterrupted dhyāna purifies the stained mind. When Manas becomes pure, moha is destroyed; the destruction of moha is Mokṣa. One whose delusion has ended attains Brahma-aikya whatever the outward circumstance of death. Such a one is called a Jñānī. 6Arjuna asked, “Kṛṣṇa, I still do not understand what Jñāna really is. Is it what we hear from Ācāryas? What is contained in the Śāstras? What is heard from one who has direct experience? Which of these is Jñāna, and what kind of Jñāna frees one from Bhava-bandha? Please tell me.” 7Paramātma replied, “Arjuna, all those forms of knowledge have their proper usefulness, but by themselves they do not free one from the bondage of becoming. That by knowing which a person is released from the saṁsāric bond of birth and death is Anubhava-jñāna—knowledge made direct in experience. Those who possess such knowledge become fit for Mokṣa.” 8Śāstra-jñāna and what is heard from Ācāryas can assist, but they do not by themselves reveal Reality as direct experience. One who is free of envy and, through Anubhava-jñāna, knows the supreme secret of Ātma-tattva may truly be called a complete Jñānī. 9Such a person must also possess Śraddhā. Without Śraddhā no one accomplishes even a small task; indeed, no living creature acts effectively without some sustained attention and trust. An action performed without Śraddhā does not yield its pure fruit. Śraddhā is therefore of immense importance. 10“Bāvā! Prakṛti, with all moving and unmoving beings, functions through Me while I remain the Witness. Because people do not understand this supreme Reality that governs all beings, the deluded take Me to be an ordinary human. Some great souls worship Me as Brahman; others worship Me under different names and forms; still others approach through Jñāna-yajña or Ātma-yajña.” 11“However one worships and whatever name one uses, it is I, Paramātma, who receive that worship. There is none other than Me. I alone appear in the many names and forms that become centres of worship. I am the fruit of all Karma, the giver of the fruit, the Adhiṣṭhāna of all, the ground of creation, sustenance, and dissolution, and the imperishable Cause.” 12“To attain Me, the very Svarūpa of the Cause, is Mokṣa; to live in that attainment is Jīvanmukti. But Bāvā, to become a Jīvanmukta one must undertake Sādhana and become free from clinging—Sarva-saṅga-parityāga. In essence, deha-abhimāna, identification with the body, must be uprooted.” 13Arjuna objected: “Kṛṣṇa, do You think complete renunciation of attachment is so easy? Even great tapasvins struggle to overcome body-identification, let alone ordinary people like us. You speak of these difficult disciplines so simply that I begin to feel discouraged. Can I really attain You? Can I attain Mokṣa?” 14Seeing his despondency, Paramātma drew near and reassured him. “Bāvā, do not lose heart so quickly. Here lies the supreme secret. Hearing alone may not bring conviction; enquire and the matter becomes clear. This path is not as difficult as it sounds, nor as impossible as you imagine. Sarva-saṅga-parityāga does not mean that you must grow matted locks, wear ochre, and emaciate the body with Tapas. Perform all your actions as Niṣkāma-karma with Īśvarārpaṇa-buddhi. That is enough. You can surely attain Me and become free. This is true; this is the secret.” 15“There is no impossible labour in practising Niṣkāma-karma, but Śraddhā must be complete. Even the smallest worldly undertaking requires Śraddhā. Should spiritual life require less?” 16“Those supreme devotees who allow no alien thought to occupy them, who perform every action with Īśvarārpaṇa-buddhi and constantly meditate on, serve, worship, and remember Me—with minds collected in Me at all times—I Myself take care of their Yoga-kṣema. Do you hear?” Kṛṣṇa said, strengthening Arjuna with affection. 17This declaration about Yoga-kṣema is often not understood correctly. From the learned to the unlearned, people repeat the Gītā’s words in many ways without living their meaning. Even commentators may explain them without the corresponding Anubhava. 18This sacred saying is like the navel of the Gītā. Just as Brahmā is said to arise from Viṣṇu’s navel, the declaration ‘Yoga-kṣemaṁ vahāmyaham’ becomes a generative centre for a sādhaka seeking Brahma-jñāna. Understood properly, it opens the meaning of the Gītā as a whole. 19Many fanciful explanations are given of this sacred verse. The text tells of a renowned scholar who used to discourse on the Gītā in the presence of a king. One day he expounded in many ways upon the verse beginning ‘ananyāś cintayanto mām... yoga-kṣemaṃ vahāmyaham’. The king would not accept his explanation and repeatedly said, “That is not the right meaning.” The scholar had received great honours and titles in the courts of many kings, so to have his exposition rejected publicly felt like a humiliating blow. He thought again, offered further meanings of the words Yoga and Kṣema, and supported them with examples. Still the king was not satisfied. At last the king said, “Understand this śloka properly and return tomorrow,” and left. 20The scholar’s confidence collapsed. Deeply distressed and humiliated, he tucked the Gītā under his arm, returned home, placed the book aside and fell upon his bed. His wife saw his condition and showered him with questions: “Why have you come home so troubled today? What happened?” He told her of the king’s questions and of the humiliation he had suffered. She listened carefully and said quite plainly, “The king is right. The answer you gave was not correct. The mistake is yours.” At this the scholar sprang up like a snake whose tail had been stepped on. “What do you know? Are you saying that a woman occupied with cooking in the house understands what I do not? Close your mouth and go!” he thundered. She was not frightened. “Nātha, why such anger when I speak the truth? Recite the śloka once more. Think carefully and you yourself will see its meaning,” she said, gradually calming his mind. 21The scholar began again: ‘ananyāś cintayanto mām...’, explaining each word separately. His wife smiled. “Nātha, what is gained merely by learning to explain the words? Tell me first: why do you go to the king at all? For what purpose have you sought his support?” The scholar replied irritably, “Must the household not be maintained? From where are our food, clothing and other needs to come? I go to him for the support of the family. Otherwise what business have I with the king?” His dharmapatnī answered, “If you had truly understood what Kṛṣṇa Paramātma says in this very śloka, you would not have gone to the king for that reason. Paramātma Himself says that when one worships Him with Ananya-cintana, takes refuge in Him, and keeps Manas constantly fixed on Him, He Himself bears that devotee’s Yoga-kṣema. You do not fulfil those conditions, yet you go to the king expecting him to bear your Yoga-kṣema. Is that not the very opposite of the verse? That is why the king did not accept your explanation.” The celebrated scholar reflected and saw his error. The next day he did not go to court; he remained at home immersed in Kṛṣṇa-ārādhanā. When the king enquired and learned that the scholar had not come, he sent a servant to the scholar’s house to discover the reason. The scholar sent back this message: “I need not come to anyone. Kṛṣṇa Himself will care for my Yoga-kṣema. Until now I had not understood this; I travelled only through the verbal meanings of the words, and therefore this humiliation came to me. If I take refuge in Paramātma, allow no other thought to enter, and remain immersed in His worship, He Himself will care for all that is mine.” Hearing this, the king rejoiced. He personally went to the scholar’s house, bowed to him, and said, “Swāmī, today you have explained yesterday’s śloka through Anubhava. My heartfelt salutations.” The king then made the point clear: propagation and ostentatious faith without lived experience are not the essence. 22The lesson is sharp. Even today many speak about the Gītā without living it. Explanation without Ācaraṇa can become an offence against the very teaching it praises. People may adore the physical book, press it to the eyes, place it on the head, worship it on a shrine, shed tears before it, and call it Bhagavān’s own word—yet if the teaching is not given a place in conduct, that reverence stops at paper and binding. If the inner content were truly revered, life would show it. A person seeking Bhagavān’s grace would not sell the teaching for worldly gain.
