Passage 17
Passages 1–22
1Taking up the thread again, Arjuna asked, “Gopāla, You have beautifully described the qualities of the Saguṇa-upāsaka and even called such devotees Yogins. Surely the Nirguṇa-upāsaka too has distinguishing qualities. Please tell me what they are, so that I may hear and understand them with joy.” 2Nandakumāra replied, “Bāvā, Arjuna, the first mark of a Nirguṇa-upāsaka is mastery of the senses. The second is sama-buddhi—an equal mind in every circumstance. The third is to remain helpful to all through pleasure and pain, harshness and hardship alike. One who possesses these three may be called an Akṣara-upāsaka.” Here Akṣara-upāsaka and Nirguṇa-upāsaka point to the same path. 3Arjuna was delighted but asked what he himself should do to become worthy of grace. Nārāyaṇa raised him and said, “Arjuna, you do not need to master all the characteristics of both paths at once. I shall give you an easier way. Place your Manas and Buddhi in Me. If that is beyond you, relinquish ahaṅkāra and perform Karma as Bhagavad-arpita. If even that seems difficult, surrender the fruits of all Karma to Me as Kṛṣṇārpaṇam. Do it not merely with the mouth but through Manas, Vāk, and Kāya. Any one of these, practised sincerely, can lead you forward.” 4“If you say that none of even these is possible, then the consequence is for you to consider.” The teaching makes clear that the seeker’s attention should be on sincere practice rather than on counting how long attainment takes. Kṛṣṇa therefore places Jñāna above mere mechanical Abhyāsa, Dhyāna above conceptual Jñāna, and Karma-phala-tyāga above even Dhyāna as an immediately transformative surrender. 5As water and fire do not naturally mix, hatred and Bhakti cannot coexist. Kṛṣṇa says those free from divisive hatred and rāga-dveṣa, who look upon all with equality, are dear to Him. If a tendency to hate remains in the Antaḥkaraṇa, whatever its form, Bhakti is incomplete. ‘Vāsudevaḥ sarvam idam’—all this is Vāsudeva. Seeing the same Ātma everywhere, to hate another is in truth to turn against oneself. 6A reader may then ask: is the absence of hatred by itself enough to realise ‘Vāsudevaḥ sarvam idam’? The text now explains. 7Merely removing hatred does not by itself bring God-realisation or Ānanda. Take the farmer. Before sowing, he removes weeds; but a harvest does not arrive simply because the weeds are gone. He must plough, prepare, sow seed, water, nurture, and cultivate. In the same way the heart-field must first be cleared of the thorny growth of rāga, dveṣa, and old vāsanās; then it must be tilled with Satya, Śraddhā, and Ācaraṇa, and the seed of Ānanda planted and disciplined Sādhana continued. Only then does the harvest of Ānanda come home. 8So the teaching is not only ‘remove hatred’ but also ‘plant Maitrī’. A wall, tree, hill, anthill, or lump of earth does not hate anyone, yet no one calls that absence of hatred Bhakti. Living spiritual love must positively flower. 9The first mark of a bhakta is freedom from hatred; the second is Maitrī; and Kṛṣṇa adds a third—Karuṇā toward those who suffer and are in need. 10Arjuna asked whether these three qualities were enough. Kṛṣṇa replied with the farming image: sowing alone does not make a crop grow; water and nourishment are needed. In the same way, removal of hatred, cultivation of Maitrī, and Karuṇā are the planting. Two great supports are still required: ‘nirmama’ and ‘nirahaṅkāra’—freedom from possessiveness and ego. These are like water and manure for the crop of Ānanda. 11Mamakāra and ahaṅkāra are not independent; possessiveness grows from the sense of ‘I’. Where ajñāna is absent, ahaṅkāra has no secure place. Hence one who seeks Bhakti must be ‘satataṁ santuṣṭaḥ’—content through enjoyment or illness, gain or loss, sorrow or pleasure. Manas should not be shaken either by fulfilment of desire or by its frustration. 12If even a small obstacle comes in the way of one’s preference, Manas is driven into agitation. Why speak of great matters? If coffee does not arrive at the proper time, if one cannot see two films in a week, if one does not sit before the radio morning and evening, or if some other small personal wish is not fulfilled, that very day there is dissatisfaction and Aśānti. Such a state cannot be called Santuṣṭi. True contentment is to remain equally satisfied whether something happens or does not happen, whether the desired result is obtained or not obtained. 13Arjuna asked, “Swāmi, You often speak of Prakṛti and Puruṣa. What is Prakṛti and what is its nature?” Kṛṣṇa explained: “Prakṛti is also called Kṣetra, the field, and here it means the manifest world. Within experience appear jaḍa and Caitanya, the seen and the seer, ‘idam’ and ‘aham’. The unfolding of guṇas belongs to Prakṛti. Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas, with their modes of sukha, duḥkha, and moha, belong to Prakṛti; so too the apparent functions of kartṛtva and bhoktṛtva.” Arjuna then asked for the nature of Puruṣa. 14“Arjuna, Puruṣa, Kṣetrajña, and the Jñeya point to the conscious knower. Prakṛti may be treated as the body-field; Puruṣa as the conscious principle that knows it. The body has names that emphasise its perishability—it wears out, breaks down, and is ultimately consumed. The conscious principle that knows the field and its changes is called the jīva.” 15Arjuna asked, “Kṛṣṇa, why call this decaying and perishable body a Kṣetra, a field?” 16Kṛṣṇa replied, “Bāvā, through this very body one can earn puṇya and cultivate the plant of Jñāna; because divine bhāvas can be grown here, it is a Kṣetra. Kṣetra also means land. Whatever seed is sown in a field produces its corresponding crop. The body is the field; the jīva is the cultivator. Sow puṇya and harvest sukha; sow pāpa and reap duḥkha and unrest; plant Jñāna and harvest Mokṣa. As a farmer knows his land, Kṣetrajña knows the body-field. The difference is contained in the syllable ‘jña’—knowing. The knower is Kṣetrajña; the field itself is not conscious of its own nature.” 17Arjuna asked, “What is gained merely by knowing Kṣetra and Kṣetrajña?” 18“Pichchi-bāvā! Enquiry into Kṣetra brings freedom from duḥkha; enquiry into Kṣetrajña brings the attainment of Ānanda. Together this is called Mokṣa.” Kṛṣṇa then fell silent. 19Arjuna, speaking for seekers, asked, “Who experiences this freedom from sorrow and this Ānanda—the jīva, or the body that is Kṣetra?” 20Kṛṣṇa answered, “Because Kṣetra is joined with the guṇas, people attribute its experiences to the jīva through association. But Puruṣa in himself has no relation to these modifications; he is Sākṣī. Iron placed in fire becomes capable of burning, but the burning power belongs to fire, not to iron by itself. In the same way bhoktṛtva is superimposed upon Puruṣa through association with Prakṛti.” 21Thus it is not ultimately correct to attribute sukha and duḥkha to the conscious principle merely because it dwells in a guṇa-filled body. As soil conditions the growth of a planted seed, the body-field provides conditions in which the seed of jīva-tattva can ripen toward Brahmatva. Satya, Śānti, Śama, Dama, and allied disciplines are like water and nourishment for spiritual growth. The many changing forms of Prakṛti arise from variations in its guṇas. A human being is joyful at one time, sorrowful at another, fearful at another, courageous at another—these changes follow shifts in the guṇas. If Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas stood in perfect equilibrium, such variation would not appear. Rajas is the binding force of desire and attachment to visible objects, always seeking engagement and result. 22Tamas obscures true knowledge, mistakes one thing for another, and binds through heedlessness, inertia, and dullness. Sattva suppresses the causes of sorrow and turns toward clarity and well-being. The text compares the guṇas to a lamp seen through different coverings. Through clear glass the one flame shines cleanly; through coloured glass its light appears in many colours; within an earthen pot it is darkened. The flame is one, but the upādhi changes its appearance. Sattva is like clear glass; Rajas like coloured, smoky, restless glass; Tamas like the lamp obscured in a dark pot. Ātma is the light itself, while the guṇas condition how that light appears through Manas and Prakṛti.
