Passage 3
Passages 1–24
1Because Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas undergo many combinations and transformations within Prakṛti, Prakṛti appears in changing forms. Ātma, by contrast, is Caitanya, luminous Consciousness; no modification of guṇa belongs to It and no stain reaches It. Buddhi, Manas, the body, and the rest belong to Prakṛti, so their limitations vary according to the predominance of the guṇas within them. 2Sattva is steady, clear, selfless luminosity; where it predominates, craving grows quiet and the person becomes fit for Ātma-jñāna. In Rajas, even acts of service may be mixed with desire for fruit, fame, or personal gain. In Tamas, knowledge is darkened and one cannot rightly distinguish what should and should not be done. So long as one remains bound within these three guṇas, one has not become Guṇātīta and cannot attain Mokṣa. Kṣetra-vicāra removes the delusion that Puruṣa truly undergoes the guṇas merely because he appears within Prakṛti. For the sādhaka, Jñāna and Jñeya are central: noble qualities prepare the Jñānī, and direct realisation of the Divine is the Jñeya. 3Arjuna listened carefully and asked, “Swāmi, what qualities must a Jñānī possess?” Paramātma replied, “Pārtha, the twenty qualities beginning with Amānitva must be present. But do not imagine that possessing the qualities alone finishes the work. Immortality comes only through Brahma-sākṣātkāra, the Jñeya. Completion in the qualities of Jñāna makes one fit to enter the Jñeya; if even one essential quality is missing, the preparation is incomplete. Therefore I first explain the qualities of Jñāna, and then the Reality to be realised.” 4What a careful order! To speak of Brahman before establishing nīti and niṣṭhā would be like trying to light a lamp without wick, oil, or vessel. Prepare these first and the flame of Brahma-jñāna can shine. The proportions too must be right: wick, oil, and lamp must support one another. Too much of one and too little of another will not sustain a steady light. 5In the same way the sādhaka must transcend the disequilibrium of the three guṇas to realise the Jñāna-jyoti and taste Mokṣānanda. Even Sattva remains, from the standpoint of final freedom, a bond—though a refined one. The text compares Sattva to a golden cord, Rajas to a copper cord, and Tamas to an iron cord. Their value differs, but all three are still cords. Freedom requires release even from the finest binding. 6Arjuna said, “Kṛṣṇa, You say a Jñānī must possess the twenty qualities beginning with Amānitva. Please explain them one by one so that I may understand and be blessed.” 7“Arjuna, your Śraddhā gives Me joy. The first is Amānitva—absence of self-importance and the hunger for honour. As water takes the colour placed in it without asserting a colour of its own, so should one’s conduct be free of the demand for recognition. A person may perform a tiny act of help or charity and immediately want ten people to know of it, perhaps even arrange publicity for it. Freedom from such self-display is Amānitva.” 8“The second is Adambhitva—absence of pretence. It is a great virtue not to pose as what one is not: not to pretend greatness without greatness, power without power, or authority without authority. To live truthfully as one actually is, without theatrical inflation, is Adambhitva.” 9Sādhakas must open their eyes carefully to this. Today the world is filled with dambha. Look in any field or at almost any public figure and pretence appears. Administration itself can become a display held in the minister’s hands. One who knows nothing behaves as though he knows everything. A man who may not have anyone at home to pour even a little gruel into his mouth can go outside and present himself as though he were the servant and leader of everyone. However incapable a person may be, he wishes society to regard him as completely capable. Dambha has become the first step everywhere. It destroys the person and then crawls through society like a harmful insect. If it is ended, a great affliction of the world is removed; if it is given room, both inner and outer life are ruined. Such a quality is unsuitable even for an ordinary person—how much more dangerous for one seeking Sākṣātkāra. 10“The third is Ahiṁsā. To cause pain, hardship, or mental distress to another is hiṁsā. Ahiṁsā is not merely refraining from physical injury. In Manas, Vāk, and Kāya, one’s conduct should be free of cruelty and selfish infliction. That integrated harmlessness is true Ahiṁsā.” 11“The fourth is Kṣamā, also called Kṣānti or forbearance. Even when others injure, betray, oppose, or hate you, let the hurt pass like a dream or a mirage rather than allowing it to harden within the heart. This is not helpless endurance because one lacks strength to respond. Kṣānti is outward patience joined with inward Śānti; it is not suppression for the sake of public approval or because one has no worldly power.” 12“The fifth is straightforwardness and honesty. Let thought, word, and action have one form, without deceit, manipulation, or hidden crookedness. This integrity is essential in both worldly and spiritual life and may be seen as another face of Adambhitva.” 13“The sixth is Ācāryopāsanā. Just as a teacher is needed for worldly learning, guidance is needed in Vedānta. Guru-bhakti awakens the Guru’s vātsalya toward the śiṣya and can raise the disciple to a higher state. As a cow lets down milk on seeing its calf, the true Guru gives Anugraha to the deserving disciple. For one seeking Bhagavān and Mokṣa, the Guru’s instruction is a vital support.” 14“The seventh is Śauca—purity. Outer cleanliness is necessary, but inner Śauca is even more important: the purification of Antaḥkaraṇa from rāga-dveṣa, kāma, krodha, and related stains so that sāttvic daivī-guṇas can shine. Purify the body with water, Manas with Satya, life through Vidyā and Tapas, and Buddhi through Jñāna.” 15“The eighth is Sthairya—steadiness. Do not change direction every minute or adopt a new mood every day. Having recognised something as good, remain with it through difficulty and practise with Śraddhā. This firmness is also Dīkṣā. Spiritual weakness and constant wavering do not serve the path.” 16“The ninth is Indriya-nigraha. The senses exist for you; you do not exist for the senses. Do not become their servant. Bring them under your direction so that they become your instruments.” 17“The tenth is Vairāgya—non-attachment to the sense-objects of sound, touch, form, taste, and smell. The senses naturally ask for what pleases them, but what they ask for is not necessarily what serves the sādhaka. Indriyārthas are not the same as Puruṣārthas; the true Puruṣārthas concern the Ātma.” 18“The eleventh is Anahaṅkāra. Ahaṅkāra is the birthplace of many defects. When it dominates, it recognises neither Dharma nor truth nor the sacred. Freedom from this swollen ‘I’ is Anahaṅkāra. Know excessive ego as an enemy dwelling within.” 19“Next is continual discernment of the defect inherent in janma, mṛtyu, jarā, vyādhi, and duḥkha. Birth, death, old age, disease, and sorrow are seen constantly, yet people rarely follow their meaning through to the end. What is commonly called worldly sukha often carries duḥkha disguised in attractive clothing. Reflecting upon the limitations of sense-life gives rise to Vairāgya and prepares Jñāna. Therefore, Arjuna, seek freedom from the cycle marked by birth, death, ageing, disease, and sorrow.” 20“Another quality is Anāsakti—freedom from grasping attachment. Āsakti is the urge that says of everything seen, ‘I want it; it is mine.’ Its root is mamakāra. For a Jñānī, the things of the world are Bhagavān’s creation, not objects upon which to build possessive identity. Be friendly toward people, but do not turn friendship into moha. Use what comes for its proper purpose while it is present, but do not dedicate your whole life to possession. At death not even a blade of grass can be carried with you. Keep this truth before the eye.” 21Before birth these relationships, possessions, and vehicles were not ours; after death they are not ours. The intermediate drama is only a temporary association. Āsakti stains the Antaḥkaraṇa, and a stained Antaḥkaraṇa cannot attain Mokṣa. Therefore one seeking Jñāna, Mokṣa, and Sākṣātkāra must avoid the adhesive pull of attachment before it hardens further. 22“Next is Samatva—equal-mindedness toward pleasant and unpleasant, sukha and duḥkha, heat and cold. Do not swell in one circumstance and collapse in another. Regard gain and loss, praise and blame, comfort and difficulty as Bhagavat-prasāda. Just as shoes protect the feet from thorns, an umbrella from rain, and a net from mosquitoes, a mind sheltered in Īśvara-anugraha is not pierced by every changing circumstance. Hence Sama-cittatva is essential.” 23“Then comes Ananya-bhakti—Bhakti without another centre. This is not remembering Veṅkaṭaramaṇa only in crisis and forgetting Śrīnivāsa as soon as comfort returns, nor using God like a condiment when life has lost flavour. Whatever comes, in every time and state, remain avibhakta—not divided—from Bhagavān. Whatever you do, say, or sing, let it be joined with Bhagavad-anurakti.” 24“Next is love of Ekānta. This does not merely mean carrying the body into a forest where no people are present. Inner solitude is Manas becoming nirviṣaya—free from the crowd of sense-objects. Apart from Bhagavān, let no alien preoccupation occupy the centre. Even in the company of advanced sādhakas, retain that inward freedom from viṣaya-dependence.”
