Passage 17
Passages 1–24
1The eighteenth quality of Jñāna is freedom from delight in indiscriminate crowds and in the company of those absorbed in sense-attachments. One may remain safer among wild animals than among influences that continually pull Sādhana outward. Saṅga shapes conduct: good company fosters good tendencies; bad company breeds bad habits. 2Because it is difficult at first to judge every influence correctly, some withdrawal from ordinary entanglement can protect Sādhana. Manas is compared to iron: contact with damp earth rusts it, while contact with fire purifies it. Thus Satsaṅga with Jñānīs and sat-puruṣas can bear even greater fruit than mere physical solitude. Nārada, born in humble circumstances, was transformed through Satsaṅga; Ratnākara, moving in a violent life, became Vālmīki through holy company. Duḥsaṅga is therefore dangerous. A sādhaka must be alert about association. 3The nineteenth quality is sustained interest in Ātma-anātma-viveka. Kṛṣṇa teaches: “I am the Eternal. Remember Me constantly and fix Citta in Me. Then whatever the body and senses do can become oriented toward Ātma. Human life itself is a struggle; therefore keep Citta upon Me and fight.” 4The final quality is Tattva-jñāna-darśana: an outlook directed toward the Reality to be known, with Mokṣa as the governing aim rather than scattered worldly goals. 5Of the twenty qualities described, if two or three are sincerely established, others may begin to arise without separate forcing. It is neither possible nor necessary to manufacture every quality independently. Nor should these twenty be treated as an exhaustive list; many virtues support the path. Kṛṣṇa presents these as principal limbs by which the sādhaka can move toward the goal. 6One who cultivates them becomes fit for Sākṣātkāra. Through this enquiry it becomes clear that body, Buddhi, senses, and Antaḥkaraṇa all belong to Prakṛti, while Puruṣa is distinct from them as their knower. Kṣetrajña is the one who knows Kṣetra, not the field itself. When Prakṛti and Puruṣa are distinguished through Vijñāna-vicāra, one recognises oneself as the desireless Sākṣī. 7To know oneself as the Witness of all is Ātma-sākṣātkāra. To know one’s own truth, to know oneself, to realise the same Ātma as all, and to know in experience that jīva and Deva are not ultimately separate—these belong to the meaning of Sākṣātkāra. This is what human birth is meant to discover. Merely being born, growing, and dying does not fulfil the distinctive human capacity; the gift is the power to know Truth. It should not be wasted. 8Arjuna said, “Swāmi, I now understand somewhat about Kṣetra and Kṣetrajña, Prakṛti and Puruṣa. But You also used the word Jñeya. Please explain it.” Paramātma replied, “Arjuna, I have already said that Kṣetrajña and Jñeya point to the same Reality, but I shall make it clearer. Jñāna is the principal means by which Paramātma is known as Ātma-svarūpa. Karma and Upāsanā are excellent Sādhanas, but the Ātma, being eternal and changeless, is finally known through Jñāna. Because it is That which is to be known, it is called Jñeya.” 9Through Jñāna one knows, ‘Ātma itself is I’; through ajñāna one takes the body to be ‘I’. This is the central difference. The same Reality is also called the Dhyeya, the object of meditation, because it is approached through Dhyāna. Thus Mukti is not a manufactured Karma-phala; Mukti is the fruit of Jñāna. 10‘Jñānād eva tu kaivalyam’—through Ātma-tattva-jñāna and complete vision, Kaivalya is realised as one’s own Reality. Prakṛti may be beginningless in appearance but is not infinite in the same sense; Kṣetrajña, Puruṣa, is beginningless and endless and is Parabrahman. 11Do not project the guṇa-dharmas of Prakṛti upon Ātma. Ātma is by nature distinct from them. The guṇas have jurisdiction only within the kingdom of Prakṛti; they cannot command the realm of Ātma. Needles move in the presence of a magnet, yet the magnet is not the mechanical doer of each movement. 12So too, in the presence of Ātma-Caitanya, the senses carry out their respective functions. At sunrise birds awaken, flowers open, lotuses close or open according to their nature, people begin their occupations, and mud dries—yet the sun is not the personal doer of each event; it is the illuminating presence. Ātma likewise remains beyond the functions of the senses. 13Birds fly in countless patterns through the sky yet leave no scar upon it. In the same way the senses may range through the ‘heart-sky’ without leaving a mark on Ātma itself. Ātma is the support of all, never merely a dependent object. 14Human beings, however, notice the supported objects and forget the support. In a flower-garland, the thread alone holds the flowers together, yet the flowers are what first catch the eye. The supporting thread is discovered only by enquiry. The garland depends on the thread, not the thread on the garland. 15Consider pots, bowls, and vessels made of clay. Does the clay exist in the pot, or the pot in the clay? In clay as such there is only clay, not a collection of separately existing pots; yet no pot exists without clay. Likewise guṇas do not exist in Ātma as limiting properties, while even the guṇa-filled appearances have no reality apart from Ātma as their ground. This reveals Ātma as Satya-vastu and the changing guṇas as mithyā in dependence. Thus Kṣetrajña-Paramātma is present as Ātma in all beings. 16Arjuna asked, “Kṛṣṇa, this Paramātma who is Sarva-bhūtāntarātma and the support of all seems very difficult to know. Though all-pervading, He is not seen by the eye; though within all beings, He is not grasped by touch. Why?” 17Kṛṣṇa replied, “Arjuna, Ātma is extremely subtle. Look again at the Pañca-bhūtas. Earth is grosser than water, water than fire, fire than air, air than space. Earth bears five sensible qualities; water lacks smell; fire lacks taste and smell; air lacks form, taste, and smell; space has only sound. As qualities fall away, the element becomes subtler and more pervasive. If Ākāśa, with only one quality, is so subtle, how much subtler must the Nirguṇa Ātma be? That very subtlety is why the outward-turned senses cannot know It. To the inward-turned, however, It is the nearest of the near.” 18For one endowed with Buddhi, this is reasonable. The complaint ‘If God is everywhere, why can no one see Him?’ misses the mode of seeing. If Paramātma is Guṇātīta, why expect Him to be caught by guṇa-bound instruments? ‘Yad bhāvam tad bhavati’: as one draws near in bhāva, Bhagavān is experienced as near; as one turns away, He seems distant. This is Bhāva-rūpa-darśana. 19The Purāṇic contrast between Hiraṇyakaśipu and Prahlāda illustrates this. Hiraṇyakaśipu searched and concluded that Nārāyaṇa was nowhere. Prahlāda declared, ‘Do not doubt that He is here and not there; wherever you search, there He is.’ For Prahlāda, Bhagavān was present even in an iron pillar. Why? His Antarmukha-buddhi stood near the Divine. The text compares human folly to a cow that, though carrying nourishing milk in its own udder, runs after dirty water. Mādhava dwells within as Ātma, yet people abandon the inward search and chase viṣaya-vāsanās. To see multiplicity as ultimately separate is ajñāna; to see the underlying unity is Jñāna. The many-divided gaze is ‘śava-dṛṣṭi’; the one vision is ‘Śiva-dṛṣṭi’. Tat, Jñeya, Ātma, Kṣetrajña, and Parabrahman point to the same Reality. 20Readers, as rivers find their fulfilment in the sea, Brahma-prāpti is the true destination of jīvas. Caitanya cannot find permanent fulfilment in jaḍa objects. Brahma-prāpti, Nitya-sukha, and Mokṣa are different names for the same fulfilment. 21Ananya-bhakti becomes possible when Vairāgya has arisen toward the world of changing forms; it then opens into Ātma-jñāna. To teach Vairāgya toward Saṁsāra, the world is compared to an Aśvattha tree. Brahman is its ‘upper’ root—not merely spatially above, but as the causal ground. Brahman conditioned by Māyā is spoken of as the source of the manifest tree. Kṛṣṇa now develops this image. 22“Arjuna, the tree of Saṁsāra is a strange Aśvattha. Ordinary trees have roots below and branches above; this tree is inverted, with roots above and branches below. It is therefore a fitting image of the world-process.” 23Arjuna asked why the name Aśvattha was chosen. Kṛṣṇa replied, “The name itself carries the teaching. Aśvattha suggests what does not remain the same until tomorrow—anitya, momentary. The peepal tree’s leaves are continually moving, and it is also called caladala, ‘moving-leaved’. The objects of the world are likewise ceaselessly changing. The image teaches the world’s impermanence and inability to yield final fulfilment, and turns the gaze upward toward Brahma-niṣṭhā.” 24To know anything completely one needs both outer and inner observation. There is Īśvara’s world and the jīva’s subjective world. The latter becomes the immediate field of bondage; the former, rightly understood, need not bind. Merely knowing the world as ‘world’ does not make one a Vedavit; knowing the world as Paramātma-svarūpa does. The effect is not independent of its cause. Brahman is the root, the countless jīvas are branches, and Karma nourishes the branching process. One who understands this becomes a true knower of Vedānta.
