In plain words
But today, where are such gurus, where are such disciples? We are building up a state of things that is beyond telling. Only when we take up this tradition of guru and disciple with a good heart, only when we welcome it with a pure feeling, only when we trust it with a spotless citta, will Ānanda that is true and eternal come to us. To recognise this truth, we must first of all understand our own principle as well. Only when we understand the bond between man and man can we recognise, in some measure, the sacredness that lies between nara and Nārāyaṇa, between mānava and Mādhava, between jana and Janārdana, as well. Today, in the education system, perverse ideas run riot in the name of education and are bringing parents to a state where they cannot walk with their heads held high. Only when feelings joined to sacrifice, forbearance and Satya, to this principle of character, come into it can education gain its true worth; but of students who cannot recognise these feelings of sacrifice and Prema, of Satya and good character, we can say outright that they cannot know the worth of education at all.
General Knowledge Comes First
Education cannot mean merely an acquaintance with many books. This acquaintance with books develops only certain kinds of ideas, but it does not set about developing good qualities, not in the least. That is why the true meaning of education is the very mark of a radiant intellect, one that recognises well the form and nature of the mind and the nature and form of the body and sets about the effort to act by them. Students must develop in themselves a strength full of responsibility. Students must keep in view not just their studies alone but, to some extent, their own future life and the higher state of society as well. So, above all, three strengths must be in them. Discipline, Devotion, Duty. Only with the principle of these three does a student become in some measure fit to take the vow of serving society.
