In plain words
It is the right way. So, to use our precious vijñānamaya and ānandamaya and to receive them, our chief duty is to look after the worthless annamaya, manomaya and prāṇamaya in the proper way. Here we must think about one more small thing. We have kept precious jewels in the box, but we must put a lock on it. We have put on the lock. We must keep the lock safe. If we do not keep the lock safe, we cannot get at even the precious things inside when we need them. Śaṅkara has been calling this very thing Bhakti. When we turn it towards Vairāgya, this box opens and the vijñānamaya and ānandamaya within it are there for us to receive. If we turn this lock of Bhakti towards attachment, the doors do not open and we do not get the precious things inside. So we must keep safe the lock of Bhakti, which lies between attachment and detachment. This Bhakti comes to us only when there is faith in God; when there is no faith in God, Bhakti does not come to us. Today most people in the world seem to be without faith in God; yet without faith in God no one can live for even a moment. We must not think that God means only taking on a particular form and incarnating in the world, or shining with a special power in one place. God is the very embodiment of the pure feeling that dwells in the seat of our heart. There is no man whose heart is without such sacred feeling. So, since that purity is in every heart, only when one has faith in oneself can it be called faith in God. Only one who lacks faith in oneself fails to take to faith in God. Every man loves himself and has faith in himself. He hopes to rise to the highest place for himself. Even the man who has no faith in God experiences in himself the divine power by which he loves himself.
