In plain words
So our chief distinction lies precisely in praying to the very God who gave us birth and entering the path of Satya, in which we carry out our duty. While our fellow human beings are suffering, we must make a fitting effort to help them as far as we can. You must recognise the oneness that is in humanness. We must also understand, to some extent, the feelings that lie between man and man. We must inquire into what it is, this principle of the Ātma that is in all things. Only then does ‘brotherhood of man, fatherhood of God’ become meaningful. Today we call one another ‘brothers, brothers’ and, with no faith at all in the bodily and mental principles, we use them as worldly, useless words. Only when we inquire into the principle that is beyond the bodily and the mental does the chance come to develop true brotherhood. So, when we want to take brotherhood in its right sense: One divine principle in all, that is brotherhood of man. We must make the effort to recognise that truth today. Satsaṅga is most essential precisely for recognising that truth. You may wonder what fruit comes of such satsaṅga. All of man's good and bad take their shape from the company of society, from the faults of the community and from the goodness of the community.
The Influence of Satsaṅga
Though the dust that has fallen on the earth has no wings at all to rise up, the dust flies up through its friendship with the wind. That same earth, by making friends with water, sinks down to the very bottom. Iron, hard and dark in form, by making friends with fire becomes soft and shining. When it joins that same earth, it takes rust and bursts away all its strength. All these happen only through company, they happen only through the friendship of society; but for man simply to change of his own accord, or to be transformed of his own accord, is not possible at all. Even a newborn child grows, through the mother's encouragement, through the mother's Prema and tenderness, in speaking, walking, reading and writing; in many kinds of learning he grows only through the encouragement of others.
