In plain words

Waking, dream, deep sleep, the state of turīya. For us, these four stages have no separate forms. On all four stages we shape one and the same personality on each stage; on each stage we experience only the present experience, and we take on the other three stages as well without heeding them at all. To recognise the truth of the oneness that is in these four stages, we must take up some kind of discipline of yoga. “Samatvaṃ yogamucyate”: through yoga comes equanimity, and through a birth fulfilled, the state of Viṣṇu comes to us. So that these two principles may be ours, we must perform certain kinds of karma enjoined by the Veda, walk in ways the śāstras approve, take the experience of the elders too as our support, and so set about bringing our life to that sacred state. Because we develop physical sight alone, we are becoming wasted lives who cannot understand even a little the reality of inner sight. As the form that granted the wishes asked of it, the tree that grants the wishes we hope for has become the kalpavṛkṣa. We call the tree kalpa. The tree is a thing that perishes; the kalpa is lasting. We can reflect how strange it is that the lasting kalpa takes the form of a tree, which perishes and decays. Ratnākara, home of gems and pearls, who more than that takes the form of the sea that shows the subtle principle of God: this we experience in the form of salt. The moon, who gives man coolness and comfort, keeps waning within a month. That such conditions of want come upon those who give the world the finest fruits, that certain unseemly ways of life are made theirs, that certain unnatural names are given them: what lies in all this is nothing but changes in the guṇas of Prakṛti. That the embodiment of immortality should dwell in this limited body is also nothing but a fault in the guṇas of Prakṛti. Yet, because the senses on the basis of the body, the mind on the basis of the senses, and the intellect on the basis of the mind pursue us birth after birth, their residue brings some change into our feelings.
