In plain words
Joys fit for experiencing the Ānanda of that samādhi arise while we stay in the natural state itself. That can be called true, sound samādhi; but somehow falling down and lying in the unconscious can never be true samādhi. It may be hysteria. It may be Emotion, or it may be fits, or it may be some other illness, but it cannot be called samādhi. It is precisely because our people of Bhārata have failed to recognise all such states in the right way, and have set about presenting these very things in the form called samādhi, that neither these sacred states of samādhi, nor the states of prāṇāyāma and pratyāhāra, nor the special value of japa and tapas are held in honour. So today we must make the effort to understand the true path, the eternal state and the sacred feeling. Where the meanings of words are themselves the things, there are no other names left for things. The very meaning that a word has is its padārtha. So the meaning within the word samādhi is itself its form. That is, sama: in an even state; dhī: the intellect. Samādhi is what stays in the state of an even intellect. This can be experienced in natural life. When? When we have experienced the full form of prāṇāyāma and pratyāhāra, then, even while living with the world in our natural state and seeing everything, and even while we are in the experience of every situation, we stay in a state that has no connection with them at all. When we turn the mind inward, the mind stays on the vision of the Ātma alone; it has no way at all to spread over Prakṛti. So the mind casts off all the form and nature of Prakṛti and stays on the Ātma alone as its aim. In that state, because it stands at a level beyond the pairs of opposites, pleasure and pain, hardship and loss, cold and heat, it came to be called samādhi. Though he moves about in the world as an individual, and though he seems to us to have made ties with society, his cast of mind has no connection at all with this world or with society. Onlookers, though, may picture its nature in many ways.
