In plain words
It goes into the sāmbār, it goes into the rasam, it goes into the pāyasam; it moves about in all of them, but the ladle knows the taste of none. So there is no use in our intellect merely moving about, like a spoon, in the lecture everyone gives. We must take it as our support and set about eating it. That is what practice is. But you, who are young: since this sacred time has come to you, I hope that you will not misuse the time; that you will picture the teachings the elders have given, their many kinds of experience, in the seat of your heart as safe things that are the support of your life, keep them safe, and from time to time, with presence of mind, mindful of time, karma and duty, and according to place, time and person, put them to use in your daily life, and so be blessed.
Clever Ways and Crooked Ways Do Not Work with God
You will have heard a small story in the Bhārata. To bring Kṛṣṇa under her control, Satyabhāmā went to Nārada and, selfish as she was, Satyā begged Nārada to give her some instruction or other, some mantra or else some yantra. Nārada resolved to teach her a fitting lesson; thinking, ‘Oho, so much selfishness! It will not work at all with God’, Nārada resolved to give the selfish a lesson they deserved, and instructed her: ‘Perform what is called the vow of the husband; in that vow give your husband away to someone; then give that person wealth equal to your husband's weight; if you get your husband back so, your husband will stay right by your side unceasingly, always, at all times, everywhere.’ Satyā, who did not know the principle of God, Satyā, who could not recognise the power and might of God, precisely because she had given way to selfishness, agreed, thinking, ‘This is an easy way, isn't it?’ She agreed and performed the vow. In the vow she gave Kṛṣṇa away to Nārada himself. After she had given Him to Nārada, Nārada set about weighing Kṛṣṇa so as to give Him back to her. Seating Kṛṣṇa on one side, Satyā brought all the wealth she had and heaped it on the other side. But Kṛṣṇa did not move at all. On this occasion a fine chance fell into Nārada's hands. ‘Mother! Satyabhāmā, you are unable to give me wealth equal to your husband's weight, so from today your husband is mine; I am taking Him away,’ he said, and made ready.
