Passage 10

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The two of them came: “Swami! Is my Advaita doctrine greater, or my Vedānta?” — so the two argued, and then they came praying to Swami, meaning that Swami should decide. Whether this Advaita path is the best, or whether going down into Vedānta, practising sādhanas through it and becoming worthy of the grace of this Lord of all is right sādhana and very great: such questions they kept asking in their foolishness. I gave them the right answer to it. To the one who argued for this Advaita: Sir! Advaita does not rest on you. Sir, Vedānta does not rest on you. This argument rests on your intellects; but if Vedānta rested on him and Advaita on this man, then, going by your intellect, when your own intellect goes astray, does that mean Vedānta has declined? Or when his own intellect goes astray somewhere, does that mean Advaita has perished? So Advaita and Vedānta do not rest on anyone. They stand wholly on their own. Following our intellects, we set about these arguments over good and bad. These arguments are merely arguments made to fill the belly, and nothing else; they can never be arguments that make us worthy of God's grace; today in the world our judgments of good and bad rest on our intellect, but no one has the authority to judge people as good or bad. When there is some kind of hatred or jealousy towards a person, you may think of that person as bad. When Prema and fondness for that person grow in you, you may call that very person good. So this good and bad belong only to the feelings of your own mind; they do not belong to that person in the least. So when we set about the effort to increase our good and cut down our bad, everyone appears to us as nothing but good. Rather than filling the head with these Vedāntas, when we fill the heart with Prema we can hold the very world in our hands. When we stuff our heads with this Vedānta, we may end our life in nothing but wrangling.

You who are young, fill the seat of your heart with sacred qualities such as Prema, forbearance and sacrifice, do not set foot at all into your passions and into turmoil of any kind, develop fitting Śānti, and spread and teach the culture of Bhārata once again along the sacred path: hoping for this too and blessing you, I bring My talk to a close.
