Passage 12

In plain words

There are four words. They stand as No and where. Add the w from the word Where to no, and it becomes God is now here. So between God is no where and God is now here, no new w was brought in, and the w that was there was not taken away. This is words magic, but it is not real nāstikatva. So God is now here is that one's way of feeling, and God is no where is this one's way of feeling; in both, what was there was only their way of feeling; there is no change at all in God. To a person who has jaundice everything looks nothing but yellow colour. That is merely a passing illness, not true vision. Then, to a person who has malaria, even a laḍḍu he eats tastes only bitter. That is merely the fault of his own tongue, not a defect of the laḍḍu. Lack of faith in God, too, is nothing but an illness. A small example. At a wedding, many people sat down in rows for the meal. Well! They served all the dishes. They took up the laḍḍus and were serving them. They went along serving one or two each. Some said, ‘I don't want it.’ But it is not because they have no liking for laḍḍus that they say they don't want them. They have sugar factory diabetes. They do long to eat the laḍḍu, but because there is an illness inside they are saying, ‘No, no.’ So he says he does not want the laḍḍu only because there is an illness in him; he too longs to eat it. Just such people are the nāstikas. Inside there is the longing. Outwardly, because of the lack of faith that is called nāstikatva, they are saying ‘No’ for the sake of what is called health. But then some more fools, when those who have the illness say ‘No’, say ‘No’ too, though they have no illness. This very kind of foolishness is growing day by day. If he has no faith, he alone will go. Am I to follow him? I must be a slave either to myself or to God. Why should I be a slave to this fellow? Saying, ‘Why should I believe this fellow's words?’, you must develop faith in yourself, or else develop faith in God. Without either, when some fool says no and you too say no and go off, your foolishness has become plain as day in doing so. So develop self-confidence in yourself, by yourself.
