In plain words
After he had been pleaded with for a while, he took them off and went inside; seeing the image of the Devī, he said in English, “How do you do, Mummy!” and went up to shake hands. Deciding that some madness had seized the boy, the good father thought it did not matter, though they stood in the presence of God, and landed him two blows.
In this way the young people of today slight their motherland, their mother tongue and their mother and father with disobedience, and bring dishonour on the culture of Bhārata. The father of those days grew angry at his son's behaviour and condemned it. But today a great many fathers admire that very thing and sing its praises! It is most necessary that parents too learn the principles of the culture of Bhārata, and teachers too must follow the right paths. For students going wrong today, the parents, the teachers and the elders, these alone are the root cause. If there is good water in the ‘tank’, good water comes from the ‘tap’. If the elders, who are the tank, are filled with nothing but vices, those same vices will come from the tap too. Everyone must understand the culture of the land; must guard the spirit of the language; must uphold the honour and dignity of mother and father; must keep the welfare of society in view. You must take up responsibility. Only then will it be possible to wipe out unrest and set injustice right.
All of you have Prema for Swami; good. But does Swami have Prema for me? How am I to win His Prema? — This is how you must think. Good qualities, good conduct, right behaviour, good thoughts: develop these, and that is enough. I ask for no other Prema. I Myself shall recognise those very things, cherish them and give security in life.
