Passage 3

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

we are becoming students who cannot recognise even this Satya. Students who are to be shaped into the leaders of the future must recognise something of the country's condition today. If today you cannot recognise your parents' condition, how can you, with evil qualities, set right the condition of society or of the country? You are becoming blind people who cannot recognise even how much your teachers and your wardens suffer for your progress. You cannot recognise even the principle of Swami, who holds many aims in His mind, to shape you today into holy students and to make you students who are an ideal to the whole country, and who strives for your sake with a holy heart and with the principle of Prema.

It is all education, education! That is, you waste your time in writing, in reading, in a paltry acquaintance with books. All this book learning is merely a hook, and an indirect one. But what the world of today urgently needs is direct experience. The physics you study, the chemistry, mathematics, zoology and the rest cannot be put to use in your daily life from daybreak to evening. When you go into the chemistry laboratory: which substances, which materials, mixed in what way, take shape as which substance? That you grasp only during that class time. Merely knowing one kind of science does not stay with you as an experience for life itself. Inside the laboratory we come to know that when oxygen and hydrogen, the two, join together, they become water; but at home, at mealtime, do you mix hydrogen and oxygen together and drink them? No. There you drink water just as nature made it. We must strive, as a matter of urgency, to learn the common sense and general knowledge of what our life needs in daily living, from daybreak till twelve at night.

So to take our education to be no more than an acquaintance with books is sheer foolishness.
