In plain words
If I show the tip of the handkerchief in My hand between My fingers, what can you say of its whole form?
God's dealings are the same towards all, and even this you are failing to recognise. Sai's divine power, the truth of His Prema, His great works: to understand these is an impossible task. For example: Sai's will for this abode of learning is one thing, and your guess is quite another. What is the inner meaning of Swami's founding this college in particular? This college is to make manifest the divinity within humanness, and to encourage you. It was founded to hold out worldly learning, to draw you to it, and to lead you into the spiritual. This college: Yaśodā, they say, would go to catch Kṛṣṇa holding out butter, with a stick kept behind her; now Sāī the Mother is calling, with learning as the butter and discipline as the stick.
Children born and raised in rajoguṇa, who have mixed the tamoguṇas into their hearts, have picked up various habits from various regions and follow various traditions, will not come near if they are shown the stick. That is the very reason for the butter: worldly learning, degrees. People judge according to each one's own guṇas and nature. Kṛṣṇa's līlās and wonders Kaṃsa called magic; wherever he looked, he saw Kṛṣṇa alone. That too, through the power of rajoguṇa, he called conjuring. Such people have dogged Him age after age. They are not lacking in this age either. ‘Is the vibhūti coming from His armpits?’ So those without Viveka, the people of tamoguṇa, suspect. ‘Has He got it in His very hands? Aren't His hands busy moving all the while?’ So those who have rajoguṇa doubt. But you must develop a sāttvika nature.
Now I am giving prasāda to five students who have lived five years in this hostel and reached fine ideals in their studies, in works of service, and in spiritual sādhanas such as bhajan. Here, I am creating a gold watch and giving it to this boy. Bearing all these hardships, studying well, happily and calmly, following the disciplines, they have nurtured good qualities and brought satisfaction to the teachers of the hostel.
Along with learning, you must also gain a large heart, pure feeling and selfless service. You must foster the feeling of equality that all are children of one mother. You must do good service to others. You must resolve that for whoever holds the command to be his all, there is nothing but well-being, for ever. To attain Sai, for the sake of the country, for the progress of all mankind, discipline is vital.
