In plain words
Blindness in every single matter. Trust is the chief thing. Each has his own trust. Each has his own faith. Faith lies beyond our time. No one can deny it. As your faith is to you, so my faith is to me. All the pain you suffer when someone stands in the way of your faith, that same pain comes to me when you stand in the way of mine. One who has recognised this Satya, we can say, has no right at all to stand in the way of another's faith. So who are the faithful? Gandhi too said it. He said that this faith is invincible. There is another reason, one that goes beyond this. We live every moment of our lives on just such faith. Faith is our very breath. Without faith we could not even go to a market and come back home. We could not go to an office and come back home. Only when one has the faith ‘I can come home’ is one able to go to the bazaar. When we build up so much faith for doings like these, for acts and tasks that give no satisfaction, why should we hang back from self-confidence, the greatest of all incomes?
Our Bhārata is sinking to this state only because it has lost its self-confidence. The cause of all our hardships is simply that we have lost self-confidence. We must honour the good. We must honour our parents and love them, and drink in their Prema. Man must conduct himself so in circumstances like these. ‘They belittle the holy and the good; are the good any the poorer at heart? How many dogs bark at the sight of an elephant! What is lost from its greatness?’ We are sinking into quite another condition. Mocking whomever we see. What person has the right to mock? Is there no hatred in you? Are you not a man? Are you without faults of any kind? No, no. Humanness has many faults in it. There are many mistakes. But we must reach the state where we correct them, make them good and walk the right path. This is the proper duty of true humanness.
Man, man, man. How we boast of our humanness! We think, ‘We are educated, we are scholars, we are nothing less than men of genius.’ But what use is it to be men of genius? What do we practise? What do we carry out in our lives? Nothing of it can be seen at all. There is no use in having such scholarship, such learning, such power of intellect. That is why: ‘With little virtue and great learning, with little virtue and high office, with little virtue and high birth: they will not let him speak, they will not let him stand.’ ‘Why ten acres of land that grows no crop? Even a little is enough, of land that yields grain.’ For us, any little that is put into practice is enough. It is not good to waste time on what is never practised, turning what is in the book into what is in the head, and what is in the head into what is in the book. Time is very important. It is priceless. We must not waste even half a moment of this time.
