Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Only when the two come together does a man's character reach its highest state. Today, in the system of education, we must carry out such teaching most urgently. If we ask who the true students are, the teachers are the true students. Students read books only as far as some one subject, one course, one degree. But teachers must go on studying books all their life. It is the teachers who can study all their life! Only when they study will they be able to pass that learning on to the students. Only from a lamp that is always burning can the other lamps be lit. So teachers are like lamps that shine without ceasing. People think of the teacher's calling, the teacher's post, as something of very low standing. That is not right. Only when the teachers are as they should be can the students be shaped into those who will raise up the Bhārata of the future. It is the teachers who make many into rulers of Bhārata. It is the teachers who make them into political leaders and into those who uplift the country. Teachers today do not recognise that truth, and are content merely to look at the kings. They cannot recognise the truth that "we are the Kingmakers". So teachers must be Kingmakers. And how should those King makers be? They must be exemplary makers.

Students must not enter elections at all

We must consider beforehand the truth of what difficulties the students may meet in the future, draw up a master plan, and try to teach it. It is not quite right always to set students to study or to work in the laboratory. Education is not the only limb of life. Life has many branches. We must give their minds and their bodies some rest. If from dawn till night they spend all their time reading books and doing research, their mental nature may grow somewhat weak.
