Passage 2

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Along with training, education must also make the heart pure. Only then does discipline come. Learning without discipline is no learning at all. Three things are most necessary to a student: fear, Bhakti and faith. Fear means the fear of sin. Speaking ill of others, harming others, karmas devoid of character, hurting others, forgetting one's culture: all these are bound up with sin. Above all, to fall into karmas devoid of character is a great sin. Character is the very life not only of boys and girls who study but of all human beings. In the matter of karmas devoid of character, students must conduct themselves with the greatest care.

"The sin above all sins is to blame others!"

Sacrifice, purity and the nurture of good qualities must, without fail, be part of education. A student's first duty is not to enter on evil paths. Not only to speak ill of others but even to listen to it is a sin! The Dharmaśāstra says that speaking ill of others, listening when others are spoken ill of, blaming others and causing others pain are great sins. When it is a sin to blame even an ordinary man, how great a sin it is to blame God, who dwells in all and knows all! "The sin above all sins is to blame others, brother!" they have said. Students must not fall into such sin.

Bhakti is to make humanness one with the Viṣṇu principle

Now Bhakti: Bhakti does not mean only doing japa, pūjā and dhyāna. Service to God is Bhakti. Only when a man is always thinking of God and remembering Him does the heart melt. Prema for God is born, flowing in a ceaseless stream. Such a change of the mind is Bhakti. To turn all of the seeker's interest, affection, attachment and Prema towards God is Bhakti. To sink into the nectar of God's Prema, forget one's very body, and experience a sacred time in the divine is Bhakti. To experience the state of oneness in which the devotee and God are not separate is Bhakti. God is the form of the universe. In Bhakti the whole universe is seen as the form of God.
