Passage 1

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Be he one who has gathered up all the śāstras and Purāṇas, a sage who knows what Vedānta teaches; in lovely mansions brimming with pleasure be he a moon among kings who delights there; be he one who has routed his foes on the battlefield and shines as the one hero of the world; who lives on the mercy of the goddess of poverty, be he a servant, lord of ill fortune: without Bhakti he is of no use at all. Rather than a lord of the world who lacks Bhakti, the servant given to Bhakti is the one to be revered. What more than this can I make known, O members of this assembly, counted among the good and virtuous?

Students, embodiments of the divine Ātma! Girl students! Those who guide education! Lovers of learning!

Today we have gained a mass of scientific knowledge, but it gives us only an outward civilisation. What we need is the ripening of the heart. That gives an inner culture. It gives the student not only the unfolding of the intellect but breadth of heart as well. Education is complete only when it holds the living power that turns a man into one full of compassion. A student must not turn into a selfish, narrow person.
