In plain words

Even to each flower: "O flower, is such a one perhaps behind your bushes? Is He perhaps behind the plants? O trees! Tell us, is He hiding anywhere among you?" So the Gopīs would pray. They could not bear to be parted from Kṛṣṇa even for a moment. Uddhava doubted the Bhakti of such Gopīs. When do doubts arise? These doubts arise in one who lacks complete Prema. Such people spin all sorts of stories with many misconceptions. The Prema of true devotees must be unshakeable. It must be such that God chooses it, and such that He bears it. It must be such that it carries one across the sea of birth. This is the true principle of Prema. Whoever mocked them or reviled them, they paid no heed. Uddhava asks the Gopīs: "Though your mothers-in-law and your husbands blame you, you do not sink. How are you able to bear it, mothers?" The Gopīs gave a fine answer: "Does the cuckoo stop its song because the crows are cawing, Uddhava? The people of the world are crows. Because the crows are cawing, how could we forget the feeling of Kṛṣṇa in our hearts? Kṛṣṇa sings as a cuckoo in our hearts. What do these crows know of the sweetness of that song? We pay them no heed. Kṛṣṇa is our life." Then Uddhava thought, "The Gopīs are not ordinary people; they are ṛṣis of old." Such courage, such purity, such fulfilment, such a complete principle of Prema come only to ṛṣis. Not everyone is able to recognise the principle of Prema. One who has true Prema does not change at any time.
