The Rāmāyaṇa of Tulasīdās came wholly from the place of the heart. Whenever doubts arose in him along the way, he would pray to Hanumān and try to learn through him the secret of Rāma.
One day a great problem arose in his poetry. However much he prayed to Rāma, no proper answer to this problem came. Unless the priest opens the door, we cannot have the darśan of God. In the same way he realised that unless we take refuge in this Hanumān, we cannot understand the secret of Rāma. Hanumān said, "You cannot tell all your trouble to me. She is always in His house, at His side, with Him, so pray to her," he said. Rāmadāsa too said the same. "Tell Him to save me, Mother Sītā, tell Him to save me. Mother, you are always at His side. Watch for a time when He is happy and at ease, a time when He is talking pleasantly with you, a time when there is no sorrow or anger of any kind, and put my word in His ear," he said. In the same way this Tulasīdās too prayed to Sītā. "Mother, I cannot go near Him. You alone are near to Him, for He is Rāma, the moon. You are the moonlight. The moonlight cannot be without the moon, nor the moon without the moonlight. So put my matter just once in His ear and have Him give the right answer to it," he prayed. The bond between the moon and its light is this: He is Rāmacandra, she is Sītā, the cool one. Śītala means moonlight. So it is not possible for this moonlight to stand in the way of that moon in any way. Once Sītā too said this. When Rāma was going to the forest, though many people told her, "Mother, you cannot bear these hardships you will meet in these dense forests": "Mother, can the moon be in one place and the moonlight in another? No. The moonlight is with the moon. So I will go with Rāmacandra alone," she said. "Where Rāma is, there is Ayodhyā. So I shall be living in Ayodhyā itself," she said. Because she renounced everything in this way, Rāma may bear with it somewhat and give an answer to it in the right way. So from that day this recommendation by women began. But they made that recommendation for the sacred path, the path that shows the Supreme. But the state of things today is that, to get these promotions and their salaries raised, people go to the wives for these recommendations.
