In plain words
Our forefathers grasped such inner meanings and attained Ānanda. But we regard the experiences and practices of the ancients as worthless and are wasting our lives. All the traditions of the ancients are very sacred. They hold out an ideal. So only when we put such an ideal into practice and then preach and teach it will it become possible to recognise the inner meanings of the sacred festival days.
Therefore, be watchful!
With this day the year named Akṣaya has begun. In this year no upheaval will go beyond bounds. But in the months of Caitra and Vaiśākha it will be severe. The heat of the sun will be fierce. In Vaiśākha it will go still further beyond bounds. Fires will be many. Many accidents will happen on journeys. After Vaiśākha has passed, some calm will settle on the world. According to astrology, political upheavals will go beyond bounds. Many changes will take place. But all these will happen for the good alone. Not to Bhārata alone: in the whole world too, changes of this kind will happen. So it is most necessary that every one pray, ‘Lokās samastās sukhino bhavantu’: that the whole world may enjoy peace, happiness and a right state.
One more small matter. It is very necessary to take certain precautions. However well we behave, however much we see to it that our words and speech are soft and sweet, some kinds of hatred keep growing. There is a chance of friends becoming enemies. But we must see that words come out with care. A tree struck with an axe will sprout again, but a mind broken by words cannot be joined.
